How did the Giant Lan Bing in Argentine National Park come into being?
Lan Bing is an optical phenomenon in essence, and the "formation" of the giant Lan Bing in Argentine Glacier National Park is also an optical phenomenon, but the causes are more complicated.
as we know, the difference of glacier color lies in its ability to absorb light with different wavelengths. The nature of ice is similar to that of water, and it is easier to absorb long-wave light such as red and orange, but less capable of absorbing green and blue light with shorter wavelength. When blue light is reflected to people's eyes, glaciers look blue, which is the most understandable explanation of Lan Bing phenomenon.
The depth of blue in Lan Bing is also related to the thickness and density of glaciers. The older a glacier is formed, the greater its thickness and density will be, and the glaciers will be squeezed and compressed for a long time, and the bubbles inside the glacier will decrease. In essence, the bubbles inside the glacier can increase the absorption of short-wave light such as blue light. The decrease of bubbles naturally means that the ability of the glacier to absorb blue light will be further weakened, and the increase of glacier thickness will also increase the ability of blue light to penetrate the ice. Therefore, the older the glacier, the easier it is to reflect blue light and the easier it is to "form" Lan Bing.
The Argentine Glacier National Park is located in the south of Argentina. There are 47 glaciers originating from Patagonia ice sheet in the national park, and the Argentine Lake where the park is located receives ice flows and ice cubes from dozens of glaciers around it. Its natural conditions determine that the glaciers in the Argentine Glacier National Park can produce Lan Bing phenomenon, while the Argentine Lake is a freshwater lake. The Lan Bing phenomenon is also closely related to whether the glaciers are pure or not. Glaciers formed by water with low salt content are naturally more likely to form Lan Bing.
