Districting History

In the early days of liberation, there were 12 districts, including 8 urban areas and 4 suburban areas. There was no street administrative system in the urban areas, and there were 19 townships in the suburbs.

In 1954, the administrative divisions were adjusted, and 12 districts and some newly added towns were merged and adjusted into 9 districts, named: Xincheng District, Beilin District, Lianhu District, Changle District, Yanta District, Epang District, Weiyang District, Caotan District, Baqiao District.

In April 1957, Changle and Weiyang districts were abolished, and the number of municipal districts was reduced to seven.

In November 1958, Chang'an, Lantian, Lintong, and _ counties were placed under Xi'an City.

In 1960, the organizational structures of Lianhu, Beilin and New City were abolished.

In August 1961, Lantian, Lintong and _ counties were set aside.

In March 1980, the suburbs of Xi'an were abolished and the organizational systems of Baqiao, Weiyang and Yanta districts were restored.

In October 1983, with the approval of the State Council, Lantian and Lintong Counties in the Weinan region and Hu County and Zhouzhi County in the Xianyang region were changed (in September 1964, _ County was changed to Hu County, and __ was changed to Zhouzhi) and Gaoling County are placed under the jurisdiction of Xi'an City. In 2016, the State Council approved the withdrawal of Hu County from counties to districts and the establishment of _Yi District.

In January 2017, Xixian New Area was managed by Xi’an City. In April, Xixian New Area officially took over 15 towns and streets in Xianyang City, with a total area of ??644.56 square kilometers and a population of about 670,000.

In November 2018, 10 towns (streets) in Yanta District, Chang'an District and _Yi District were handed over to the Xi'an High-tech Zone for trusteeship.
