Geography of Wanshan Islands

Wanshan Islands generally refer to the eastern part from the southern tip of Kowloon Peninsula to the west of Gantou, which is connected with Dangan Island, and the western part of the connection between the west bank of Yamenkou and the west bank of Dajin Island. From Humen in the north to Sanbei Wine Island in the south of Dajin Island, there are more than 300 large and small islands. The main islands are 10, such as Dahao Island, Hong Kong Island, Sanzao Island, Qinheng Island, Nanshui Island and Qi 'ao Island, as well as Jiapeng Islands, Dangan Islands, Sanmen Islands and Gaolan Islands, among which Dahao Island is the largest, with an area of 14 1.6 square kilometers. The whole archipelago is densely distributed.

Wanshan Islands are mountainous, like the camp in front of Humen, like a huge ship moored at the mouth of the Pearl River, which has become a natural barrier in South China and an important gateway to Guangzhou. The coastal areas of Guangdong are hilly areas. Wanshan Islands used to be a part of Guangdong mainland, and it was an extension of Lianhua Mountain in eastern Guangdong to the west via Hong Kong. In geological history, Wanshan Islands in Late Pleistocene was still a mountain peak on land. In the middle of Holocene, due to the rising sea level, mountainous valleys and low-lying areas were submerged and separated from the mainland, forming overlapping islands. Geologically, the strata that make up Wanshan Islands are mainly late Jurassic Yanshanian granite, with only a few sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks and volcanic rocks. The structure is dominated by faults, and there are two groups of faults, one in the northeast and the other in the northwest, but the scale is not large. There is no large-scale folding structure. Wanshan Islands has a great height difference, with winding peaks, steep coasts and fjords everywhere. Lantau Island is the highest peak in the archipelago, 935 meters above sea level. Peaks over 200 meters are common, forming undulating hills in Wanshan Islands. The eastern islands are dominated by erosion, with exposed bedrock, steep slope and sparse vegetation. The western islands belong to accumulation landform, with dense vegetation and slow terrain. Scenery such as ancient sea erosion terraces and sea erosion mushrooms can be seen everywhere.

Wanshan Islands has been a sparsely populated place since ancient times. During the Qing Dynasty, due to the frequent maritime traffic at the mouth of the Pearl River, these islands became hiding places for pirates. 1898, Britain and the Manchu government signed the "Special Provisions on Expanding the Border of Hong Kong", which included leasing the islands adjacent to Hong Kong Island to Britain. However, because Britain believes that Wanshan Islands are far away from Hong Kong Island and will not directly threaten Hong Kong, which is beyond the jurisdiction of these islands, Wanshan Islands are still under the jurisdiction of China.

With the establishment of the Republic of China, Wanshan Islands were also under the jurisdiction of the National Government. However, the civil war broke out in 1946, and the national government was losing ground. As the mainland of Guangdong Province was captured by the People's Liberation Army, the national army of the Republic of China concentrated its forces on the coastal islands such as Wanshan Islands. 1On May 25th, 950, the People's Liberation Army launched an attack on Wanshan Islands and forcibly landed on the beach, which was known as the naval battle of Wanshan Islands. At the beginning of the war, the national army won and sank Guishan and other warships, but with the continuous reinforcement of the People's Liberation Army, the national army did not continue. Finally, on June 27th of the same year, the PLA successfully acquired the main islands of Wanshan Islands.
