What are the famous cultural landscapes in Baghdad?
The palace of believers
There is a six-story "Palace of Believers" in the center of Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, which was one of the office and living places of Saddam during his presidency. In 2003, American troops bombed Saddam Hussein's possible hiding place in Baghdad, and many buildings were blown to ruins. According to US military records, on the night of the war, the US Air Force dropped two 900kg bombs nicknamed "Bunker Terminator" on the main building of the "Believers Palace". In the next four days, at least six other similar big things landed in the "Palace of Believers". It caused serious damage to the "believers' palace" of reinforced concrete structure, and the traces left by the bomb were clearly visible. However, the bunker specially built for Saddam Hussein under the "Palace of Believers" has been completely preserved and is gradually becoming an "informal tourist attraction" for residents of the "Green Zone" in downtown Baghdad.
After the war broke out, the "Palace of Believers" was looted many times. First, thieves, large and small, took advantage of the chaos after the US military entered the city and stole the items collected inside. Then, American troops stationed in the Green Zone also frequently entered the Believers' Palace to dismantle the building materials that can be used for the decoration of their camps. Even so, people can still find some "small souvenirs" worth collecting from the ruins of the believers' palace. For example, the remains of crystal lanterns hanging in the hall. Although the buildings on the ground are in a mess, the bunker under the believers' palace is almost intact. There is no lighting equipment in the bunker, and American engineers have not figured out the structure of the tap water system in the bunker, resulting in serious water accumulation in some rooms. It is reported that Saddam's bedroom in the bunker is not large, and the wallpaper is just different from other rooms. Before the war broke out, Saddam hosted a meeting of senior officials in this bunker.
Tower of Babel
Five thousand years ago, Baghdad was located in Ma Pingchuan, where there once stood a magnificent tower-Babel. People don't know where the Tower of Babel originally came from, only that it entered the Jewish Bible and the Old Testament as early as ancient times.
In Hebrew, "Babel" means "rebellion", so this tower is called "Babel". Some people interpret the word "rebellion" as "Babylon", the city as "Babylon" and the tower as "Babylonia". In Babylonian, "Babel" or "Babylon" means "Kamino Cardo". It is puzzling that the same word has diametrically opposite meanings in two languages.
In fact, there is a reason for this. In 586 BC, King Nebuchadnezzar II of the new kingdom of Babylon destroyed the Jewish state, demolished the holy city of Jerusalem, burned the temple, and brought the king and nearly 10,000 subjects to Babylon, leaving only a few of the poorest people. This is the famous Babylonian prisoner in history.
The scale of this tower is very grand. In 460 BC, after the tower was built 150 years ago, Herodotus, an ancient Greek historian, still admired the damaged tower when he visited Babylon. According to his records, the Tower of Babel was built on many huge platforms. These platforms have eight floors, and the higher they are, the smaller they are. Marduk Temple was built on the top platform. There are spiral steps on the outer edge of the city wall, which can go around the tower and reach the top of the tower; There is a seat in the middle of the tower ladder for rest. Each side of the tower foundation is about 90 meters long and the tower is about 90 meters high. According to the actual measurement and calculation by archaeologist Coard Wei at the end of19th century, the side length of the tower foundation is about 96m, and the total height of the tower and the temple is about 96m, which is almost the same. Babel was the tallest building in Babylon at that time and could be seen anywhere in the country. People call it the Tower of Babel. Some people also call it the place where the gods of heaven set foot on their way to the mortal residence, and it is the "post station" or "hotel" of Heaven.
Baghdad pavilion
The Baghdad Pavilion is built in the garden of Topkapa Palace, which is the best place to overlook the city and the strait. The building is basically a plane symmetrical shape, with a central dome with a diameter of 9m, doors on three sides and protruding spaces on all sides. Except for the central dome, the roof of the building is quite flat, forming a deep overhang, supported by 22 pillars of the balcony. The steeple protruding from the roof is actually the chimney of the heater. The interior of the building is decorated with colored glazed tiles, shells, ivory and other materials, which is of noble quality and is a boutique in similar buildings.
