Gravenstein Castle

The castle of Gravensteen, also known as "castle of the count", is a medieval castle located in Ghent, Belgium. The Earls of Flanders have castles in many major cities in Belgium. Because these Earls have special powers and legal norms, they will constantly move from one city to another. However, although they have built many castles in various cities, they will only live in one castle for a few months at a time. Ghent's Gravenstein Castle is just one of these castles, but Gravenstein Castle is the only one built in the Middle Ages and completely preserved to this day.

The present Gravenstein Castle was built by count Philip of Alsace in 118, and it was modeled after the Crusader Castle. Before this castle was built, there was a wooden castle in the same place. According to speculation, this wooden castle was built in the 9th century.

before the 14th century, Gravenstein Castle was always the residence of the Counts of Flanders, but in the end it was abandoned. Subsequently, the castle cost the seat of the county government, and then became a building, until it was completely abandoned.

in p>1885, Ghent bought the castle and began to repair and renovate it. Nowadays, the newly built buildings have been removed, and the walls and main building of the castle have been restored to their original appearance.

Nowadays, Gravenstein Castle has become an important tourist attraction in Ghent, and the castle is also fully open to tourists, who can also climb to the top of the castle to see the surrounding beautiful scenery.

Saint-Bavo Cathedral

Founded in the 12th century and completed in the 16th century, Saint-Bavo Cathedral is a perfect combination of romanticism, early and late Gothic styles, and it is famous for its collection of many masterpieces. Adoration of the mysterious lamb, a 3-fold painting placed in the side hall on the left side of the gate, is a treasure of the church.

St. Buff's Cathedral was built on the basis of the Chapel of St. Johnthe Baptist. At that time, the Chapel of St. John the Baptist was only a wooden building, which was built in 942. The original architectural remains of the chapel can still be seen in the basement of St. Buff's Cathedral.

The chapel was converted into Romanesque style in 138, and the historical traces of this expansion can also be found in the basement of the church.

During the period from 14th century to 16th century, the church continued to expand and transform, and was finally transformed into a Gothic-style building. The new choir seats, the expanded cross wing of the church, the central corridor and the ancient tower to the west of the church were all built during this period. On June 7, 1569, the construction of St. Buff's Cathedral was completed.

in p>1539, due to the rebellion against Charles V, the old St. Buff monastery was dissolved. However, after the dissolution, the monks continued to preach, and the monastery of Saint Bavo became the Church of Saint Bavo. In 1559, the Diocese of Ghent was established, and St. Buff's Church became the main church of the parish.

St. Buff's Cathedral not only has an architectural appearance that combines Roman, Gothic and Baroque styles, but also attracts people with its artistic treasures. In addition to the Mysterious Lamb mentioned earlier, there are also sculptures such as "Saint Bavo Enters the Convention at Ghent" by Peter Paul Rubens and "the baroque pulpit" by Laurent Delvaux.
