Mashan, alias Maanshan, is located about 7 kilometers west of Jimo District, Qingdao City, Shandong Province. It is located in the west of Jimo, with Jiaoji Railway in the south and Jimo City in the east. It has always been a military stronghold. It is composed of four connected mountain bags, shaped like a saddle, so it is also called "Maanshan", with the highest peak at an altitude of 233 meters.

There are abundant wood fossils in Mashan area, the scientific name is "silicified wood", which varies in diameter from tens of centimeters to more than 1 meters high, and its shape and texture are the same as those of trees. The number and scale of wood fossils in Mashan area are rare in China.

The most famous one is a fossil of Taxodium ascendens, which was found in 1983, weighing about 2 tons, 6 meters long, 7 centimeters in diameter at the thick end and 6 centimeters in diameter at the thin end. It belongs to Cretaceous and is a new species of wood fossils found in China. The whole trunk of this fossil has transverse texture, which is broken into 12 segments. The texture is obvious and the annual rings are clear, so it has important scientific research and ornamental value.
