Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning Province and the economic, cultural, transportation and trade center of Northeast China. Shenyang is located in the southern part of Northeast China, in the middle of Liaoning Province, connected to the Liaodong Peninsula to the south, and to the foothills of Changbai Mountain to the north. It is located within the Bohai Rim economic circle and is an important junction between the Bohai Rim region and the Northeast region. It is located at 41°48′11.75″ north latitude. , 123°25′31.18″ east longitude, the city’s total area exceeds 12,948 square kilometers.
Shenyang has profound cultural heritage and is known as "the birthplace of one dynasty and the city of two generations of emperors". 7,200 years ago, humans farmed, fished and hunted here, thrived and created the Xinle culture. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it was an important town of Yan State. After Qin Shihuang unified China in 221 BC, he divided the country into 36 counties, and Shenyang belonged to Liaodong County. During the Western Han Dynasty, Shenyang already had a city outline and was called "Hucheng". In the Tang Dynasty, it was renamed "Shenzhou".
In 921 AD, Taizu of the Liao Dynasty immigrated here and built an earthen city, and production developed accordingly. During the Jin Dynasty, Jin Taizu captured Shenzhou and continued to use the name "Shenzhou".
In 1296, the Yuan Dynasty rebuilt Tucheng, renamed Shenzhou "Shenyang Road" and placed it under the jurisdiction of Liaoyang. Since Shenyang is located in the north of Shenshui (Hun River), according to the traditional Chinese orientation theory, that is, "the north of mountains is yin and the north of water is yang", so Shenzhou was changed to Shenyang. Since then, the name "Shenyang" has officially appeared in historical materials, with a history of 702 years.
In 1386, the Ming Dynasty changed the name of "Shenyang Road" to "Shenyang Zhongwei". In 1625, Nurhachi, the first emperor of the Qing Dynasty, moved the capital from Liaoyang to Shenyang and began to build the imperial palace (today's Shenyang Forbidden City) in Shenyang City. In 1643, Emperor Taizong Huang Taiji of the Qing Dynasty renamed Shenyang "Shengjing". In 1644, after the Qing Dynasty moved its capital to Beijing, Shenyang became its accompanying capital.
In 1657, the Qing Dynasty established Fengtian Mansion in Shenyang with the intention of "carrying fortune from heaven", and Shenyang was also called "Fengtian". In 1911, after the Revolution of 1911, Shenyang became the capital of the Fengcian warlords. In 1923, the Fengtian Municipal Government Office was officially established, marking the first time that Shenyang had a municipal system. In 1929, Zhang Xueliang changed "Fengtian City" to "Shenyang City" after "Northeast Changing Flag".
In 1931, after the Japanese imperialists launched the "September 18th Incident" and occupied Shenyang, they changed "Shenyang City" to "Fengtian City". In 1945, with the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, "Fengtian City" restored its name as "Shenyang City". On November 2, 1948, Shenyang was officially liberated. In 1953, Shenyang City was changed to a municipality directly under the Central Government.
In 1954, Shenyang City was changed to a municipality under the jurisdiction of Liaoning Province. In 1964, the Liaoning Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to establish a Shenyang special area. In 1993, Faku County and Kangping County in the former Tieling City were placed under the jurisdiction of Shenyang, and Xinmin County was removed from the county and established as a city.
As of June 2019, Shenyang City governs Heping District, Shenhe District, Huanggu District, Dadong District, Tiexi District, Hunnan District, Yuhong District, Sujiatun District, Shenbei New District, There are 10 urban areas in Liaozhong District and 3 counties (cities) including Xinmin City, Faku County and Kangping County.
