In 1999, scholar Wang Yuehua summarized ecotourism into two major points, three major standards and four major functions.

The two main points are: (1) the natural attributes of the tourist objects, and (2) the tourist objects will not be damaged.

The three major standards are: (l) the tourism object is a native and harmonious ecosystem, (2) the tourism object should be protected, and (3) community residents participate.

The four major functions are: (1) tourism function (2) protection function (3) poverty alleviation function (4) environmental education function.
