Introduction to Mei Lanfang’s beard

"Mei Lanfang·Beard" is a new modern Peking opera jointly produced by the Propaganda Department of Taizhou Municipal Party Committee and Jiangsu Provincial Performing Arts Group. It is produced by Taizhou Municipal Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau and Jiangsu Provincial Performing Arts Group Peking Opera Theater performance. Luo Zhou serves as the screenwriter, Xu Chunlan and Xie Zhenqiang serve as vocal designers, Wu Xiaoping composes the music, and Fu Xiru stars. [1][2]

The play tells the story of Mr. Mei Lanfang, who grew a beard and made a clear decision, stopped singing and dancing, stopped performing for the Japanese and traitors, and bid farewell to the stage for five years. [2]

On October 22, 2019, it premiered in Nanjing, Jiangsu. [3]

Plot introduction

In 1956, Mei Lanfang returned to his hometown of Taizhou to perform to worship his ancestors. When he received an invitation to tour in Japan, he recalled a past event fifteen years ago. As a starting point, he told the story of the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941 and the Japanese cavalry. Under the threat of the Japanese government, Mr. Mei Lanfang grew a beard and made a clear decision, stopped singing and dancing, refused to perform for the Japanese and traitors, and bid farewell to the stage for five years.
