"The No. 1 Chestnut Village in the Suburbs of Beijing"

At the southern foot of Yanshan Mountain, at the foot of the Great Wall, about 65 kilometers away from downtown Beijing, there is a small village called Liudu River.

The small village is rich in Yanshan chestnuts with shiny color and sweet taste. It is known as "the first chestnut village in the suburbs of Beijing".

To be called "No. 1", the output is naturally decent. In good years, this small village with only more than 500 people living there can produce up to 1.2 million jins of chestnuts.

In addition to the output, the history of chestnut planting here is also very long. As early as the Warring States Period, chestnuts were already planted in the Yandi area of ????Beijing. Sima Qian's "Historical Records" records: "There are thousands of jujube trees in Anyi, and thousands of chestnut trees in Yanqin..."

From logging and burning charcoal to the mountains full of chestnut trees

Although the location of Liuduhe Village during the Warring States Period was There are chestnut trees, but it was not until the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty that Liuduhe people really planted them extensively and made a living from them.

The ancestors of the Liuduhe people immigrated from Shanxi in the early Ming Dynasty. The Liuduhe River is located in a mountainous area. There is no arable land and it is difficult to produce food. So people cut wood to burn kilns and eke out a living by selling charcoal.

It was not until the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty that the imperial court ordered the planting of trees on the nine sides. The Ming Dynasty garrison began to plant chestnut trees on the Mutianyu Great Wall not far from Liudu River. The ancestors of Liudu River learned from this. Planting technology.

Due to the special geological and climatic conditions, the chestnuts produced here are particularly sweet and waxy, which made them famous in the capital. By the Qing Dynasty, they even became a "court tribute".

Relying on the small chestnuts, the people of Liudu River got rid of the days of "logging and burning charcoal", and the small mountain village with billowing black smoke became a paradise with chestnut trees on the mountain and birds singing and flowers fragrant.

Once the road is open, sales will be open

However, the mountains and inconvenient transportation have always restricted the development of the village.

In the 1990s, there was a road in the village that could lead to the outside of the mountain, but the road was only one meter wide and only horse-drawn carriages could be used.

At that time, a horse-drawn carriage could pull 3,000 kilograms of chestnuts, but the village's chestnut production had reached more than 500,000 kilograms, and horse-drawn carriages alone could not transport such a heavy weight.

Looking at the mountains of chestnuts, the Liuduhe people couldn’t sit still and must build roads.

However, the village collective had no income at that time, so everyone had to figure out how to build roads on their own. The village party secretary at that time raised money through loans, and the villagers brought their own dry food and went to work with steel drills and hammers.

In just half a year, the rugged path was widened into a flat avenue.

Since then, villagers no longer need to go out of the village to sell chestnuts. During harvest time, traders drive trucks directly into the village to purchase.

The agricultural products in the village were shipped out, and talents and funds from outside were gradually introduced. The small mountain village has since embarked on the road of development.

Scientific planting turns a lean year into a good one

In 2001, Huairou established the Chestnut Experiment Station, and a large number of technicians who knew the technology and had experience went to the fields.

But the technician who had just arrived encountered a "cold reception." Because as soon as they arrived, they asked the villagers to cut down the numerous branches of the chestnut trees.

In the traditional consciousness of villagers, many branches mean more fruits. If they are cut off, it will affect the harvest.

Later, under the persuasion of Lao Huang, a village doctor who was highly trusted by the villagers, some people gradually agreed to give it a try.

But this trial was incredible. Not only did it increase production and income, but the quality also improved. After tasting the sweetness, the people of Liuduhe began to trust the power of scientific planting.

In recent years, the experimental station has proposed the plan of grafting new varieties on century-old chestnut trees, and Lao Huang also grafted his own chestnut trees.

Originally, according to the laws of nature, chestnut harvests are divided into small and large years. In the big year, Lao Huang's chestnut trees can harvest more than 12,000 kilograms, and in the small year, the output will be halved.

After adopting the new grafting plan, Laohuang Xiaonian’s harvest also exceeded 10,000 catties. The results of scientific planting have turned a lean year into a good one.

After entering the new century, Huairou began to build the Yanshan chestnut planting area as a whole. With Lihuagou as the main body, an eight-kilometer-long rural road was built through Liuduhe Village. The development of regional tourism has greatly boosted the tourism industry in Liuduhe Village, and the lives of the villagers have become more and more prosperous.
