The only island in the world where there is no time. The sun never sets for 69 days. The first thing you do on the island is to take off your watch -
Working at sunrise and resting at sunrise have become our work and rest habits formed in accordance with time. However, not all corners of the world are suitable for arranging life according to the rising and setting of the sun and the moon. In the northernmost part of Norway, there is an island called Sommaroy, also known as Summer Island. As the world's first "timeless zone", residents here have long forgotten the existence of time. Many tourists are curious about the "no time zone" and come here to explore and explore.
There are polar day and polar night phenomena in the Arctic Circle. The further north you go, the longer the days of polar day and night. Therefore, the North Pole only has one sunrise and sunset a year, and half of the year is daytime. Half of it is night. Somaloy Island is located on the west coast of Norway in the Arctic Circle. There are about 350 residents living on the island, and they make a living by operating fishing and tourism. Whenever the sun rises in May, the 69-day period of extreme daylight begins.
For us, it is hard to imagine how confusing it is to have 69 days of day and no night. Locals will play football at 2 a.m., mow lawns, paint houses, and swim at 3 a.m.; they will also spend several days fishing at sea. Anyway, it is during the day and they can enjoy the summer sunshine. The rule of "work when the sun rises and rest when the sun sets" no longer applies here. People only think of going to bed when they feel tired or sleepy. This has been true for generations. In a sense, time has completely lost its meaning here.
Where there is extreme daylight, there will naturally be extreme night. After entering November, the long polar night begins; it is already winter, and the entire island is covered in ice and snow, as if it has fallen into an endless sleep. When the residents woke up and opened the curtains, it was still dark, and everyone's daily activities were far less active than in the summer. However, from September to March every year, the Northern Lights, which tourists are most looking forward to, will appear here. If you stay in a local cabin, you may be lucky enough to see green or even pink light strips cutting through the night sky, which is very shocking.
Therefore, in 2019, local people jointly submitted a letter to the Oslo Parliament in Norway, requesting the abolition of the island's time system; at the same time, they can arrange work, school and rest time more flexibly based on their actual situation. In a show of determination, many residents took off their watches, threw away their clocks and wore them on the bridge that connects the island to the mainland.
Nowadays, many tourists will follow this custom before going to the island. Just like tourists from all over the world who are used to wearing padlocks on bridges, they changed to padlocks when they arrived at Somaloi Island, indicating that they were ready to forget time.
In addition to going to the island to experience "saying goodbye to time", tourists can also enjoy the spectacular open fjords, winding coastline, pure blue sky, and grasslands of different shades around Somaloi Island. As well as simple and fairy-tale colorful wooden houses, everything makes people feel relaxed and happy. Since there is no pollution here, all the scenery is very pure, like a paradise. Interested tourists can also go fishing with the island residents, or go whale watching with experienced whale experts.
To go to Somaloy Island, you need to first arrive at Tromso, a port city in northern Norway, and then drive there for more than an hour. Tromso + Summer Island is also a very mature local tourist route. For urbanites who are chased by time every day, occasionally spending 1 or 2 days on the island to say goodbye is a way to relax.
