What is it that Malaysia requires hotels to levy a tourist tax on tourists?

According to Sin Chew Daily, Malaysian Minister of Tourism and Culture Nazri proposed the first reading of the 20 17 Tourism Tax Bill in the House of Commons on the 4th, stipulating that all hotel operators must levy tourism tax on tourists.

According to the Act, all hotel operators must apply to the Customs Bureau for registration in order to pay the tourism tax to the Customs Bureau when it expires. Violators can be fined not more than 30,000 ringgit, imprisoned not more than one year, or both.

If a tourist fails to pay the travel tax, fines, surcharges or other fees, it will be regarded as a crime and may be prohibited from leaving Malaysia until the travel tax is paid, or some mortgage or guarantee can be given to the satisfaction of the Director of Customs.
