Why don't Italian drivers stop at the crosswalk?
However, in Italy, this is indeed a very common behavior. As a professional traffic planner and a person who walks more than driving, I tend to look at walkability with a trained eye. So I noticed that not stopping pedestrians is not an evenly distributed behavior, but the degree of this situation is different in different situations: when the traffic is fast, there are more people in big cities than in small towns, and there are more people on the road 1+ 1, and there are more people in southern Italy than in northern Italy at rush hour.
Theoretically, pedestrians crossing the road should be regarded as a sign of "yield" or "yield" by drivers: when approaching the sign, drivers look at vehicles (or pedestrians) with right-of-way on both sides and stop to let them participate in the intersection when they see anything.
Most drivers give way before the "appropriate" yield sign. They must give way to other vehicles, but few people give way before the crosswalk. Why?
Generally speaking, this behavior is triggered by a simple but very sad fact: at the sign of the intersection of yield control, drivers have a motive to pretend to be priority, because once an accident happens, they will not suffer huge personal losses, damage and any compensation for their cars will be insured. On the crosswalk, pedestrians have no such motivation, because in the event of an accident, they will suffer great personal injury and may die.
Drivers know this. They know that pedestrians will not enter their tracks, especially when they drive fast. Therefore, they do stop at the "yield" sign, but they don't stop at the crosswalk. This is sad, because fundamentally, it comes down to the dominance of car users: if pedestrians dare to pretend that they have the right of way, they will be killed on the spot.
