816 Project Scenic Area

The 816 Underground Nuclear Project is located in Baitao Street (formerly Baitao Town), Fuling District, Chongqing, close to Wujiang, the cave is hidden in the Jinzi Mountain. The military tunnel was once a nuclear plant entity (non-productive, non-radiative) with a total length of approximately 20 kilometers. There are 18 large tunnels built in the tunnel, with more than 130 roads, guide tunnels, branch tunnels, tunnels and shafts.

In September 1966, China’s second nuclear raw materials industrial base, Project 816, was established here. It officially started in 1967. After 17 years of construction, more than 60,000 construction troops have been invested. In 1984, the project came to an end, but due to the needs of the international situation and the strategic adjustment of the national economy, it was urgently stopped. In 2004, the state approved declassification.

The 86 Army Cave has a three-layer trunk cave system with a total length of more than 20 kilometers. The floors in the cave have obvious functional distribution and strong isolation, like a maze. There is also a 9-story building with an elevator in the cave. The design and construction of the cave represented the high level of architectural design and engineering construction of caves at that time.

The tourist resources in the cave include: 816 Nuclear Military Cave, the main cave of the nuclear plant, the nuclear reactor hall, the nuclear waste disposal site, the "bottom of the pot", the central control room, the exhaust tower, etc.

In September 2009, the 816 Project site was listed as a cultural protection unit in Chongqing. On December 2, 2006, the 816 Project site was listed as the "Second Batch of China's 20th Century Architectural Heritage". On January 27, 2006, Project 816 (816 Scenic Area) was selected into the "China Industrial Heritage Protection List". On July 29, 2008, it was rated as a national AAAA tourist attraction.

The 816 Project is an important representative project in the history of my country’s third-line construction. At the same time, as a former nuclear plant entity, Project 816 is open to the public in the form of tourism products, which is rare both domestically and internationally. Project 816 is also a rare national defense education project.
