Tibet must-see attractions and recommended places that are worth visiting

The beauty of Tibet is extremely unique. Tibet not only has the famous Potala Palace to visit, but there are also many other beautiful attractions to visit. It is recommended that you go to Yangzhuoyongcuo, Namtso, Barkhor Street, Sera Temple and other places. They are all very good travel choices.

1. Potala Palace

The tallest and most majestic palace in the world, it is the most important symbol of Lhasa and even Tibet, and is also the holy place in the hearts of all pilgrims.

It mainly consists of the Red Palace and the White House. The tallest Red Palace in the middle is an important place for religious ceremonies, and the surrounding White House is mainly the venue for the Dalai Lama's activities. There are pagodas, statues, murals, thangkas and scriptures, the most notable of which are the eight stupas of the Dalai Lama dating from the fifth century. There are three shooting locations in the Potala Palace: the Wangyaoshan Observation Deck on the southwest side of the Potala Palace, the artificial lake in Zongjiao Lukang Park and the Potala Palace Square.

2. Yamdrok Yongcuo

Together with Mabang Yongcuo and Namtso Lake, it is known as the three largest lakes in Tibet. It is called "the goddess's scattered turquoise earrings" by Tibetans.

The Zhongbala Pass overlooking Yangzhuoyongcuo shows a rich blue color when illuminated at different times. This water comes from the snow water of the surrounding Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, and the lake water will turn into ever-changing blues with the light. There is a section of road by the lake not far from the laid-off snow-capped mountains. Walking here or camping by the lake is the best way to experience the beauty of the sheep.

3. Barkhor Street

Barkhor Street, also known as "Bajiao Street", is located in the old city and is the most famous turning road and commercial center in Lhasa. There are also some Tibetans on the street expressing their inner piety through sacred prayer rituals.

Almost all the houses facing the street are shops, selling various Tibetan clothing and handicrafts; as well as products from India, Nepal and other places.

Of course, delicious food is also indispensable. Many famous restaurants in Lhasa are located here, such as Maggie Ami, Linxia-style King of Kings, Guangming Port Qiongtian Teahouse, etc.

4. Namtso

The second largest saltwater lake in China and the highest saltwater lake in the world. Since ancient times, pilgrims have continued to visit it, and it is a holy place in the minds of pilgrims. The five islands in the lake are known as the incarnations of the Five Buddhas and are regarded as holy places visited by kind-hearted men and women.

Every year in the Year of the Sheep in the Tibetan calendar, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhists will set up altars in Namtso to hold large Dharma gatherings, and believers will go to Namtso Lake to turn around.

5. Sera Monastery

Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery and Ganden Monastery are known as the three major monasteries in Lhasa. It is the latest one to be built among the three major monasteries.

The Sera Monastery has the most famous scripture debate ceremony in Tibet. The debate ceremony is held in the debate room at the northernmost part of the temple. There are many people attending the scripture debate, so you can get a good seat if you arrive early.

Many of the main halls of Sera Monastery contain ancient murals. It’s best to bring a flashlight or headlamp for easy viewing. There are tens of thousands of Vajra Buddha statues preserved in the temple, most of which are made locally, while a few are brought from the mainland or India.
