Who are the outstanding German players in the NBA?
Dirk Nowitzki is a well-known German basketball superstar and has a high reputation in the world basketball community. In the eyes of many fans, "Ramstein" is the greatest foreign player in NBA history. Nowitzki has had a brilliant NBA career. Currently, he has dedicated his 19-year career to the Dallas Mavericks, bringing them the first NBA championship trophy in team history (2011). In terms of personal honors, Nowitzki also won the regular season MVP, several All-Star teams, and the Best Team of the Year.
As a big man with super scoring ability, Nowitzki has always been the idol of many young players. Recently, the American media "Eternal Sports" released a photo of the 1995 NBA All-Stars. I believe most fans are familiar with Payton (No. 20) and No. 40 in this photo. Can you name player No. 11? The No. 11 player named Detrev Schrempf is Nowitzki's predecessor and the first German player to play in the NBA. So after playing three and a half seasons with the Mavericks, Schrempf was sent to the Indiana Pacers in the middle of the 1988-89 season.
After coming to the Pacers, Schrempf still played as a substitute. However, this does not prevent him from performing well on the court. Instead, he thrived with the second team. In 1991 and 1992, Schrempf won the NBA's Best Six Award for two consecutive years. In the 1991-92 season, he played 80 games for the Pacers in the first four games, scoring 17.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 0.8 steals, shooting 53.6% from the field and 32.4% from 3-point range.
So, in the following season, Schrempf became the team's starting lineup and was selected to the NBA All-Star team for the first time in the 1992-93 season. In the 1993-94 season, Schrempf was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics by the Pacers. In the Sonics, he quickly adapted to the new team and team system.
In the 1994-95 and 1996-97 seasons, Schrempf was selected as an All-Star substitute and helped the Sonics reach the NBA Finals in 1996. After spending six very good seasons with the SuperSonics, Schrempf joined the Trail Blazers in the summer of 1999, but at this time his competitive status gradually declined with age and his playing time was greatly reduced. After playing two seasons with the Trail Blazers, the 37-year-old Schrempf officially retired in 2000, ending his 16-year career.
