The Great Buddha Temple, a famous ancient temple in Jinhua, is located in the secluded mountains and dense forests 2 kilometers north of Caozhai Town, Jindong. The Great Buddha Temple Scenic Area covers more than 70 acres of mountainous land and has nearly a hundred various buildings. It was originally a group of A complex of ancient buildings with different forms and well-proportioned shapes, in which the architectural arts of the Eternal Dynasties such as brick carvings, stone carvings and wood carvings are also preserved.

The Great Buddha Temple has a long history and has gone through many vicissitudes of life. According to the existing records of Jinhua Prefecture and County Chronicles, the temple was originally called Chisong Temple. It was built by the monk Daoqiong in the sixth year of Datong (AD 540), Emperor Wu of Liang Dynasty in the Southern Dynasties. It was about the same period as the famous Xinchang Buddhist Temple in our province. Shenming Wanli {Jinhua The official annals) says: "The monk Daoqiong stopped in the south of the mountain. Hearing the sound of chanting gold and stone, he walked up the edge of the rock and saw a carved stone Buddha. She had a very large appearance, six feet high, and she was sitting down like a statue. So she built the temple." It was mentioned in Guangxu {Jinhua County Art, Literature and Stone Zhuan): Wang Xiangzhi (a native of Jinhua in the Song Dynasty), in his book "Yi Ge Ji Sheng", recorded that Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty planted a stele on Chisong Temple in the fourth year of Chui Gong (688) (the stele has been Lost); in the second year of Jianlong in the Northern Song Dynasty (961), a stele was erected at the gate of the temple and a book was engraved on it (Reconstruction of the West Rock Buddhist Temple). Liu Yue wrote an article, oral instructions and a seal on the forehead (this stele has long since disappeared). It is speculated from this that the Great Buddha Temple was originally called Chisong Temple, and it was renamed Shifo Temple from the middle of the Tang Dynasty to the second year of Jianlong in the Northern Song Dynasty.
