Laiyang is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province and is managed by Yantai City.
Laiyang City is located in the hinterland of Jiaodong Peninsula. As of May 2019, it has jurisdiction over 13 towns, 5 streets, 1 provincial economic development zone, 1 provincial coastal tourist resort, 784 administrative villages, and an area of ??1,732 square kilometers. It is the famous "Chinese Pear Township" It is the “Hometown of Dinosaurs in China”, “Hometown of Chinese Calligraphy”, “Hometown of Peanut Oil in China” and the birthplace of the national intangible cultural heritage “Mantis Boxing”.
Changyang County was established in the Western Han Dynasty, and was renamed Laiyang County in the Later Tang Dynasty. From 1950 to 1958, it was the seat of the Laiyang Special Administrative Office. It was the political, economic, and cultural center of the Jiaodong Peninsula at that time. In 1987, it was removed from the county and established as a city.
Laiyang has outstanding people and has produced cultural celebrities such as Cui Zizhong, a painter of the Ming Dynasty, Song Wan, a poet of the early Qing Dynasty, and Sun Mofo, a famous modern calligrapher. Laiyang is the birthplace of the rural revolution in Jiaodong. It gave birth to the first Communist Party member in rural Jiaodong, the first rural party branch in Yantai, the first county committee and the first central county committee in Jiaodong.
Laiyang has been known as the "Peninsula Land Dry Terminal" since ancient times. Historical evolution of Laiyang
In the Xia Dynasty, it was the land of Laiyi; in the Shang Dynasty, it was the land of Lai Kingdom; in the Western Zhou Dynasty, it was the land of Laihou Kingdom; in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty and Qin is the eastern border of Qi County. In the sixth year of Lu Xianggong (567 BC), the Qi State destroyed Lai and built a new city near the ancient city of Laixi to replace the Lai State's rule over the Jiaodong area.
In the Western Han Dynasty, Ting County (south of Laiyang today), Zoulu County (now part of Laixi), Changyang County (central and north of Laiyang), Changguang County (now part of Laixi), Guanyang County (now part of Laixi), Northwest of Haiyang) in Laiyang. In the third year of Xianning in the Western Jin Dynasty (277), Guanyang and Changyang were merged into Changguang County. In the eighth year of Yuankang (298), Changyang County was restored (its location is south of Changshan Village in today's territory).
In the first year of Yonghui of the Tang Dynasty (650), Changyang City was flooded and the county seat was moved to Laiyang City today. In the first year of Tongguang in the Later Tang Dynasty (923), Zhuangzong Li Cunxu changed Changyang to Laiyang (that is, in the Yangtze River of Laishan, and Laishan was the ancient name of Jingqi Mountain) in order to avoid the ancestral name of Guochang.
In 1950, Laiyang District was established. In 1956, Wendeng District and Laiyang District were merged into Laiyang District. In 1958, Laiyang Prefecture and Yantai City were merged into Yantai Prefecture (later changed to Yantai Area). On February 20, 1987, Laiyang County was abolished and Laiyang City was established. In 2009, Laiyang City was listed as a pilot county for the fiscal system reform of directly managed counties (cities) in Shandong Province.
