China’s Betrothal Gift Map is released! Do you still dare to get married after reading this?
The betrothal gift is a set gift given by the man’s family to the woman’s family when they get engaged. Throughout the ages, whenever there was a wedding, the man would prepare a betrothal gift and go to the woman's home to pick up his wife. The woman is responsible for purchasing the dowry and waiting for her husband to greet her.
Four years ago, a "Bride Gift Map" claimed to be the first in the country was released, detailing the betrothal gifts required in various places, including cars, houses, gold, etc., ranging from high to low. The map quickly became popular on Weibo.
According to 2013 data, the average betrothal gift in Hebei Province is 10,000 yuan plus "three golds (gold bracelet, diamond ring, diamond necklace)", which costs about 30,000 yuan. In other words, in four years, even if the cost of buying a house and a car is not included, the average betrothal gift in Hebei Province has increased by 2-5 times.
The investigation found that this phenomenon also occurs in Henan, Shandong, Guizhou, Shaanxi, Gansu and other places, and shows the characteristic that "the poorer the area, the more high-priced betrothal gifts appear." In the past four years, the betrothal gifts in Guizhou have increased from 20,000 yuan in gifts plus electrical appliances to 88,000 yuan in gifts plus "three golds"; in Shaanxi, the number has increased from 30,000 yuan in gifts plus "three golds" and "three silvers" to 100,000 yuan in gifts plus "three golds". Yidong ('dong' refers to a car)"; the gift money in some rural areas of Gansu has skyrocketed to 180,000 yuan.
It is worth mentioning that there are differences in the increase in bride price in some first-tier cities. In the past four years, the betrothal gifts in Beijing have increased from 10,000 yuan plus gifts to 200,000 yuan plus a suite; in Shanghai, the betrothal gifts have remained unchanged at 100,000 yuan plus a suite; in Guangzhou, the betrothal gifts have increased from 10,000 yuan plus gifts to 200,000 yuan plus a suite. The "three golds" increased to a total value of 50,000 yuan in betrothal gifts.
The situation of betrothal gifts in ethnic minority areas such as Xinjiang and Tibet also varies greatly. In Xinjiang, Uighur girls value wedding jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings) more. Gifts are negotiable, ranging from 30,000 yuan to 100,000 yuan. Local Han men need a gift of 200,000 yuan plus one to get married. A house (both men and women pay half, or the man buys a house and the woman buys a car). Four years ago, the bride price in Xinjiang was 8,888 yuan plus double gifts. Tibetan men living in Tibet are undoubtedly happy, because they do not need to give gifts to their brides. They only need to give varying amounts of yaks (8,000 to 10,000 yuan a head), sheep or cars.
After investigation, among the areas where the bride price has increased, the bride price in the western region is higher than that in the eastern and southern regions, and the bride price in the impoverished mountainous areas is higher than that in the suburban villages.
