Topographic features of Beijing
1. Plain topography: Beijing is located at the northwest edge of the North China Plain, with relatively flat topography. Most urban areas are between 30 and 60 meters above sea level, showing a flat terrain as a whole.
2. Around the basin: Beijing is located at the southern edge of Yanshan Mountains, surrounded by numerous mountains and hills, forming a natural basin geographical environment. The Yanshan Mountains are located in the west of the city, while the east and south are open plains.
3. The northwest is high and the southeast is low: Beijing's terrain gradually declines from the northwest to the southeast, with the mountains in the northwest relatively high and the plains in the southeast relatively low. This terrain change makes the heights of the east, west, north and south of Beijing obviously different.
4. Rivers and water systems: Yongding River, a famous mother river, flows through the south of Beijing, and there are other tributaries and canals. Yongding River provides water and convenient transportation for the city. In addition, there are some lakes in Beijing, such as Kunming Lake and Beihai in the Summer Palace.
5. Urban development layout: Due to the topographical characteristics, Beijing's urban planning and development usually takes the southeast as the main city center, and the mountainous areas in the northwest are more used for nature protection and tourism.
The topographical features of Beijing are the combination of basin plain and mountain hills, which has an important influence on urban development and climate formation.
Beijing Tiananmen Square
Tiananmen Square is located in the center of Beijing, at the northern end of Tiananmen Square, adjacent to the Palace Museum. Tiananmen Square was founded in the Ming Dynasty and rebuilt many times. The present Tiananmen Square was rebuilt in A.D. 1950, and it is a large-scale brick-wood suspended mountain building. It used to be the main entrance of the ancient imperial city, and it was also the place where the emperors of Ming and Qing dynasties held important ceremonies and celebrations.
As one of the important historical and cultural sites in China, Tiananmen Square represents the dignity, history and modernity of China. It is one of the places that tourists must visit when they go to Beijing, and it is also an important window to understand the history and culture of China.
