Why is this town in Vietnam the only place where it snows?

As we all know, the tropical weather is very hot, and it is impossible to form snow in hot weather, so it is almost impossible to snow in tropical areas. But this is not the case. Sabah, a small town in Lao Cai province, Vietnam, is located in the tropics, but it occasionally snows here in winter. Tropical snow, I believe many people, like me, have heard of it for the first time.

Southeast Asia is basically located in the tropics. The climate in tropical areas is characterized by high temperature all year round, with no obvious changes in four seasons. It is summer almost all the year round, and it is very hot. The annual minimum temperature is not less than 16 degrees Celsius, and the average temperature is 24 degrees Celsius. 16 degrees Celsius is still quite high. A thin coat can survive the winter, and such a temperature will not form snowflakes at all.

However, the altitude in Sabah is too high, reaching1640m. As we all know, in the same place, the higher the altitude, the thinner the air and the lower the temperature. So the temperature in Sabah is different from that in tropical areas. The average annual temperature here is only 15.3 degrees Celsius, which is lower than the lowest temperature in tropical areas. The temperature in Sabah can reach single digits in winter, and occasionally it can reach below zero. In addition, Sabah is rich in water vapor, so it is very common for Sabah to snow when a very strong cold wave strikes.

In a country with high temperature all the year round like Vietnam, it is a kind of welfare to have Sabah, which is very suitable for summer vacation. As early as the last century, when Vietnam was a French colony, French colonists found Sabah as a summer resort in the vast Vietnam because they couldn't stand the high temperature in Vietnam, and spent the hot summer here.

Sabah is actually a tourist attraction worth visiting. It's close to our country, 50 kilometers behind Yunnan Province. You can go to Sabah for a day without signing in, which can be said to be very convenient.
