History and Culture

Origin of the name Shidu: In ancient times, the Juma River was very big and no bridge could be built on the river. Every time you turned a big bend and entered a village, there was a ferry. There are 10 bends within 20 kilometers of Shidu, and there are 10 ferries, which is why Shidu got its name. Another saying is related to Buddhism. "Shidu" is the abbreviation of Buddhism's "World in ten directions, universal salvation for all living beings". The ten directions of the world are east, south, west, north, southeast, northeast, southwest, northwest, up and down. Why are the first to fifth crossings of Shidu not called "crossing", but starting from the sixth crossing are called "crossing"? Because Followers of Buddhism must adhere to the five precepts (also known as the five precepts), which are not to kill, not to steal, not to engage in sexual misconduct, not to lie, and not to drink alcohol. Only after passing these five levels can one be able to attain enlightenment. (The fifth crossing is called Xiguan) The Six Paramitas are also called "Six Degrees" and "Six Reaching the Other Shore", which are the six ways proposed by Buddhism to reach the other shore of Nirvana from the other side of life and death. These six ways are: giving, observing precepts, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, and saving all sentient beings who are destined to be saved. Only when all sentient beings are saved can we realize Bodhi, and benefit ourselves and others. "Ten crossings" is a symbol of complete success and fruition.
