During the Hongwu period of Ming Dynasty, with the completion of Zhuanghebao and the birth of Hekou ancient town, the strategic position of controlling Hexi became more and more obvious. By the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, agriculture, handicrafts, commerce, culture and transportation in the estuary area had reached a considerable scale. For more than 400 years in the middle and late Ming Dynasty, Zhuanghebao was once the largest commercial port in Lanzhou. Because of its unique geographical location, it was once the "first pass in Gansu".

The ancient buildings in Hekou ancient town in Ming and Qing dynasties are well preserved.
