Xu Xiake (1586-1641), named Hongzu, also named Zhenzhi, was born in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province. Ming geographer, traveler and writer. His 600,000-word "Xu Xiake's Travels", written after 30 years of investigation, has opened up a new direction in geography to systematically observe and describe nature. It is not only a geographical masterpiece that systematically examines the landforms and geology of the motherland, but also a masterpiece of tourism that describes the scenic resources of China. It is also a masterpiece of literature with beautiful words and has far-reaching influence at home and abroad. In recent years, it has become a new fashion in China's tourism industry to regard Xu Xiake as a tourist saint and follow in Xu Xiake's footsteps to visit the great rivers and mountains of the motherland.

Influenced by the culture of a farming and reading family, Xu Xiake was eager to learn when he was young. He was well-read and especially fond of Dijing Tuzhi. As a young man, he set up his travel ambition of "a man's dream is to see the blue sea in the morning and the sky in the evening". Xu Xiake's travel career can be roughly divided into three stages:

The first stage is the preparation stage for the travel before the age of 28. The focus was on studying the geographical and cultural heritage of the motherland, and visiting places such as Taihu Lake and Mount Tai based on interest, without leaving any travel notes.

The second stage is the first stage of the tour from the age of 28 (1613) to the age of 48 (1633). It lasted for 20 years and visited Zhejiang, Fujian, Huangshan and Songshan, Wutai, Huashan and Hengshan in the north. Famous mountains. However, only one volume of travel notes was written, accounting for about one-tenth of the whole book.

The third stage is from the age of 51 (1636) to the age of 54 (1639). It lasts for 4 years and visited the mountains and rivers in the south of the Yangtze River, such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Huguang, Yunnan and Guizhou, etc., and wrote the following 9 volumes of travel notes.

Xu Xiake’s footprints cover 19 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions today. He was not afraid of hardships and dangers. He was robbed three times and ran out of food several times, but he still moved forward bravely and rigorously recorded the results of his observations. Until he entered Lijiang, Yunnan, and was unable to walk due to foot illness, he still insisted on writing "Travel Notes" and "Mountain Chronicles", and basically completed the 600,000-word "Xu Xiake Travel Notes". At the age of 55 (1640), Yunnan local officials sent Xu Xiake back to Jiangyin by car and boat. He died of illness at home in the first month of 1641 at the age of 56. The posthumous works were compiled into a book by Ji Huiming and others and were widely circulated.
