The school was founded in 1979. It is the earliest independently established tourism college in China. It was originally affiliated to the National Tourism Administration and was transferred to Shanghai in 2000. manage. In August 2003, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Shanghai Tourism College and the Shanghai Normal University School of Urban and Tourism merged to form the Shanghai Normal University School of Tourism to provide academic education at all levels from junior college to master's degree.

In 2011, the school successfully passed the acceptance of the National Demonstration Vocational College Construction Plan of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, becoming the only national model higher vocational college in the tourism category in the country.
