Shaanxi Institute of Archaeology recently conducted an archaeological excavation of Laofenliang Cemetery in Jingbian County, Shaanxi Province, and achieved great results. Its achievements are of great significance to the study of the burial stages, cultural features, funeral system, ethnic relations, county outlook and environmental changes in the northern border areas of Han Dynasty.

Laofenliang Cemetery is a large-scale Han Dynasty cemetery located near Yangqiaopan Town, Jingbian County. Archaeologists cooperated with railway construction to excavate it in the early stage, and only found about 2 tombs within the construction scope. The total number of tombs in the whole cemetery may be tens of thousands. Among the more than 1 tombs excavated this time, there are 3 mural tombs, most of which are painted in the tombs. The main themes of the paintings are dragons and white tigers, horses and chariots, people's stories (such as Confucius meeting Laozi) and immortalization, which reflect the rich ideological connotation of Taoism and Confucianism.

At present, all the tombs excavated have sloping tombs. The tombs can be divided into soil cave tomb, brick-chamber tombs and vertical-cave earth tombs, among which most are brick-chamber tombs, mostly medium-sized tombs. Many adjacent tombs in the tombs are in the same direction and close in age, indicating that there may be close social and blood relations between the tomb owners. The funerary objects are mainly pottery wares, with few bronzes, ironware and money. The combination of utensils is generally ding, box, pot, beans, cans, bowls and warehouses. There are also unearthed bottles with narrow necks, retort, Boshan furnace, pottery figurines and wooden carriages, which are common in the Central Plains.

There are flat pots and small-mouthed pots with the ethnic style of the northern grassland, and there are also signs of the southern Chu culture style, such as paired funerary wares and painted pottery made of imitation lacquerware, which shows the characteristics of close integration between the northern and southern nationalities.
