Historical History

In the 32nd year of Guangxu (1906), Duanfang, then the governor of Liangjiang, wrote to Emperor Guangxu, requesting permission to "residents from various Nanyang islands, Honolulu, San Francisco and other places" "He returned to Nanjing to study, with the idea of ??"great education and the connection between overseas Chinese". After preparations, the school site was chosen to be Miaoxiang Temple in Xuejiaxiang, Nanjing. The place is located in the center of Nanjing City, south of the Drum Tower, north of the Chanting Tower, and adjacent to Jinling University in the northwest.

On March 23, 1907, Jinan Academy officially opened. The first batch of 21 students were all returned overseas Chinese from Java, and most of them were originally from Guangdong.

On August 28, 1907, Pan Lizhai and Liang Yingtang, directors of the Batavia Chinese Association, escorted 10 overseas Chinese students to Nanjing to study.

In May 1908, the third batch of 46 overseas Chinese from various Southeast Asian islands arrived in Nanjing.

Early students from Jinan were generally thirteen or fourteen years old. They were far away from their hometown and parents, traveling across the ocean to study for their motherland. They were young and lacked the ability to take care of themselves. In addition, the language habits and living environment were quite unfamiliar to them. It is generally difficult to adapt to such places. Therefore, the school adopts the "home school system".

All facilities are designed to resemble those of a home, and students are managed according to each student’s habits. Any deficiencies will be corrected accordingly. Duan Fang, the governor of Liangjiang, took great care of overseas Chinese students and treated them extremely favorably. He stipulated that overseas Chinese students would be exempted from tuition fees, room and board fees, except for bringing their own clothing and pocket money. Winter and summer uniforms are issued separately every year. The school also provides free medical treatment for overseas Chinese students.
