Gulangyu Island was originally called "Round Shazhou" or "Round Island Son" because there is a rock on the beach in the southwest of the island with a hole in it. Whenever the tide rises, the waves hit the rocks, and the sound is like drums. People call it "Gulangyu Stone", hence the name Gulangyu.

The green coverage rate of Gulangyu Island is over 40%, and the plant population is rich, including more than 90 families of trees, shrubs, vines and ground cover plants.

Representative scenic spots include: Sunlight Rock, Lu Manor, Haoyue Garden, Yuyuan Garden, Gulangyu Stone, Gulangyu Piano Museum, Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall, Underwater World, Natural Bathing Beach, Sea Paradise Structure, etc.

Gulangyu Scenic Area has successively won the honors of national 5A-level tourist attractions, national key cultural relics protection units, and the most beautiful five cities in China.
