You don't have to change trains in Beijing. You can take T121/T124 from Guangzhou to Changchun, and then change trains from Changchun to Baishan. I have done that train, which is very comfortable. There are many people changing trains in Beijing, and the tickets from Beijing to Changchun are not cheap. It is much more convenient to change trains in Changchun. If you want to get a discount by train, if you can find a student ID card in the "Guangzhou-Changchun" section, you can enjoy a discount of half price for hard seats and 25% discount for sleepers.
