Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is located in the bustling Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone in Pudong, Shanghai, adjacent to the Oriental Pearl. Its overall structure consists of two buildings, the main building is divided into five floors, two underground floors and three above ground floors, with a total construction area of 22,600 square meters and a total investment of 55 million US dollars.

The museum is divided into nine exhibition areas, namely, China, South America, Australia, Africa, Southeast Asia, Cold Water, Polar Regions, Coastal Areas and Deep Sea Areas (subsea tunnels). The museum has a total water volume of 6 300 tons, and adopts a closed life-sustaining system to produce artificial seawater with ordinary tap water, so that ornamental fish can live in a high-quality water environment. Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is the largest tourist attraction in Shanghai with the theme of displaying marine life and ecology, and it is also one of the largest artificial seawater aquariums in the world.

Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is the only aquarium in the world with an independent China exhibition area. Most of the animals on display are protected by the state, including Chinese sturgeon, mullet, Chinese alligator and giant salamander.

China has a vast territory and rich species. There are more than 900 species of freshwater fish, but unfortunately, one tenth of them are endangered, among which Chinese sturgeon and mullet are the most typical examples. Acipenser sinensis is a very old vertebrate with a history of10.40 billion years, which can be called "living fossil in water".

It was conceived in the Yangtze River and grew in the sea. It is huge and powerful, ranking first among 27 species of sturgeon and the largest sturgeon in the world. The adult Chinese sturgeon is 3 meters long and the female Chinese sturgeon can weigh up to 250 kilograms.
