Inspired by the traditional Shanghai game "Game Stick", the pavilion consists of 20 functional modules which are irregularly and freely combined, representing 20 regions in Italy. The whole exhibition hall is like a miniature Italian city, full of traditional Italian urban elements such as alleys, courtyards, paths and squares.

People-oriented city

The building consists of 20 functional modules, representing 20 regions of Italy, just like a miniature Italian city.

Inspired by "Shanghai"

For many adults in China, the colorful game sticks inadvertently turned out will definitely remind them of their happy childhood. However, they may not know that Italians in the Apennine Peninsula in southern Europe not only like this game, but also call it "Shanghai". Whether such a name means that the game originated in this great city of China is unknown and difficult to verify. However, it is this game and its name that inspired the creation of Italian designer Jim Paul. He skillfully applied the combination of different shapes of game sticks to the design of the Italian Pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo, and created that refreshing work, which was highly praised by the judges, and stood out from more than 60 entries and became the final design scheme of the Italian Pavilion.

Integrating the "Shanghai" game into the design shows that Mr. Jim Paul, a designer in his sixties, still has a childlike innocence. It also shows his efforts to find a bridge between Italy and the host city of this World Expo. As Mr. Jim Paul said in the interview, "I hope to find a way to combine and reinterpret the spirit and form of traditional Italian urban layout with China culture, show the value of contemporary Italian culture, and take into account the elements of the host country."

Mr. Jim Paul said that the Italian Pavilion he designed covers an area of 6,000 square meters and is 18 meters high. It consists of 20 functional modules, representing 20 regions of Italy. Just as the game sticks can be assembled freely, the 20 building blocks of the Italy Pavilion can be disassembled and assembled in a smaller scope, thus showing an ever-changing posture. The Italian Pavilion is like a miniature Italian city. From the outside, the whole Italy Pavilion is like a mosaic, which can form various patterns and reflect the harmonious relationship of multi-cultures in different regions. There are narrow streets, courtyards, alleys and open squares in the exhibition hall. Beautiful gardens, water and natural light will create a comfortable and warm environment during the communication.

Calling for the Return of "City of People"

"Better City, Better Life" is the theme of Shanghai World Expo. According to Kundieri, the general representative of the Italian exhibition area, this theme actually reveals the most important concept of modern urban development, that is, the city is people-oriented. He said: "people are the most important element in modern development, and cities exist for people's lives, so we attach great importance to people-oriented and can be said to show a real micro-city." Therefore, the Italian Pavilion designed by Mr. Jim Paul is called "the city of people".

Different nationalities and cultures have different understandings of "people-oriented city" and "people-oriented city". For Italians, their traditional urban design is the most classic interpretation of these concepts. Therefore, the Italy Pavilion will devote itself to presenting its traditional classic city symbols, such as alleys, courtyards, paths and squares, to tourists from all over the world. Kundieri said that these elements are the most important components of traditional Italian cities. Although these elements are missing in modern Italian cities, before World War II, about 80% of Italians lived in such a characteristic environment. The "People's City" design of the Italian Pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo is a continuation of this traditional concept, not only to arouse people's memories of their own city history. Moreover, I hope to return to the traditional living environment. In addition, the Italy Pavilion will put "people" at the center of buildings and cities through humanized new space design and innovative materials.

Transparent concrete highlights environmental protection

Environmental protection and sustainability have been the primary concerns of Italian Pavilion design from the beginning. Mr. Jim Paul said: "We put forward the eco-climate strategy in the Italian Pavilion of this World Expo. Using solar radiation in winter, using natural airflow and water flow to cool down in summer, and removing hot air through automatic regulation system can reduce the internal temperature of buildings. While controlling the radiation, the photoelectric integrated module is used to concentrate the heat energy on the transparent glass, which can fully save electricity. Finally, the design of the top cover can effectively prevent rain erosion. "

Jim Paolo also specially designed some "blade" incisions for the Italian Pavilion, so that they could be "hung" on the three sideline lines of the pavilion and penetrated into them. It is this bold design that not only makes the appearance of the venue modern and dynamic, but also reflects the external light into the venue to improve the lighting effect, and forms a ventilation corridor with the central hall to adjust the temperature in the venue.

It is particularly worth mentioning that the Italian Pavilion has made innovations in building materials, using this new building material to increase indoor light and adjust the temperature in the pavilion. According to reports, the exhibition hall will adopt a kind of transparent concrete, that is, adding glass components to traditional concrete, and using the proportion changes of various components to realize the gradual change of different transparency. Light passes through transparent concrete with different glass textures, creating a fantastic color effect, and the injection of natural light can also reduce the use of indoor lighting, thus saving energy.

The "Italian Innovation" contest was jointly organized by the Italian World Expo Committee and the Public Administration Reform Committee. Focusing on the theme of "People's City" of the Italian Pavilion, the expert jury selected two innovative technical themes that are most in line with this concept-urban development and quality of life, covering all aspects related to architecture, management, organization, maintenance and development, mobility, information, health, public safety, environmental protection, e-government and public affairs.

Antonio Cianci said that the competition received 500 applications from all parts of Italy. Among them, 77% came from major companies, 65,438+00% came from universities, 9% came from research centers, and 4% came from science parks and business incubators. Most of the applicants are small and medium-sized enterprises, most of them have less than 250 employees, and 48% of the companies have an annual turnover of less than 500,000 euros. The submitted plans mainly focus on urban architecture and planning, environmental technology and human health. The purpose of the competition is to select individuals, laboratories, universities, private enterprises and other entities committed to developing cutting-edge technologies, and to stimulate greater development plans.

Most of the achievements of the "Innovation in Italy" competition to be displayed in the Italy Pavilion are real products, such as coatings that absorb smoke and dust in the air, new foods and the optimization and upgrading of existing products in the market. Antonio Cianci said that Italy has a strong sense of innovation. A recent survey of 1000 scientific and technological products showed that 30% of the products came from Italy. I believe that the combination of Italian innovative ideas and China's technical expertise will have a positive impact on the future development of science and technology.
