History of Bridge on the River Kwai
The Bridge on the River Kwai is located in Kanchanaburi, about 100 kilometers away from Bangkok, Thailand. It is a railway bridge. It was not originally a tourist attraction. It was forced by the Japanese army during World War II in order to occupy Myanmar as soon as possible. Part of a supply line that took more than 60,000 prisoners of war and laborers more than a year to build.
Because many laborers and prisoners of war lost their lives during its construction, this railway was also called the "Death Railway."
As part of the railway, the Bridge on the River Kwai was originally a wooden bridge that was destroyed by aircraft bombing during the war.
Thailand later rebuilt the bridge.
The Bridge on the River Kwai is not long, and tourists can complete the tour in about ten minutes by walking.
Today's River Kwai does not have much of the desolation brought about by the war.
