Where is Shennongjia?
Shennongjia Forest Area, referred to as Shennongjia, was established in 1970 with the approval of the State Council and is directly under the jurisdiction of Hubei Province. It is the only administrative division named after a "forest area" in China. It is located in the tourist belt consisting of Wudang Mountain, Shennongjia and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. Shennongjia Forest Area is located in the west of Hubei Province, bordering Baokang County, Xiangyang City, Hubei Province to the east, Wushan County, Chongqing City to the west, Xingshan Mountain and Badong to the south, the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, Fang County and Zhushan County of Shiyan City to the north, and far away Overlooking Wudang Mountain Scenic Area. It spans 109°56′~110°58′ east longitude and 31°15′~31°75′ north latitude. The region has a total area of ??3253 square kilometers. It is located in the United Nations "World Geopark" and governs 6 towns, 2 townships and 1 country. A national nature reserve, a state-owned forestry enterprise forestry administration, and a national wetland park, with forestland accounting for more than 85%.
In 2013, the Shennongjia Forest District achieved a regional GDP of 1.85745 billion yuan, an increase of 9.8% over 2012. Among them: the added value of the primary industry was 177.23 million yuan, an increase of 5.0% over 2012; the added value of the secondary industry was 766.65 million yuan, an increase of 9.7% over 2012; the added value of the tertiary industry was 913.57 million yuan, an increase of 10.9% over 2012. The proportion of the three industrial structures was adjusted from 9.8:42.1:48.1 in 2012 to 9.5:41.3:49.2.
Shennongjia is China's first "Triple Crown" heritage site that has been jointly included in the three major protection systems of UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Nature Reserve, World Geopark, and World Heritage. On July 17, 2016, at the 40th World Heritage Conference being held in Istanbul, Turkey, Shennongjia in Hubei Province, China was included in the World Heritage List, becoming the first World Natural Heritage in Hubei Province and the 11th World Natural Heritage in China. On August 7, 2018, the Hubei Provincial Government approved the withdrawal of Shennongjia Forest District from poverty-stricken counties. In September 2018, it won the title of "China Natural Oxygen Bar".
