Zhanjiang is located in the south of China, above Leizhou Peninsula, and is a prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province. It borders Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the west, Hainan Province across the sea from Qiongzhou Strait in the south, and Maoming City in the east. Zhanjiang has developed land, sea and air transportation, is the economic center of urban agglomerations in western Guangdong and Beibu Gulf, and is the shortest port city in Chinese mainland to Southeast Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania. The South China Sea Fleet Command of China People's Liberation Army is located here.

Zhanjiang used to be a national special economic zone, but it has been cancelled due to the slow economic development. Leizhou City, Zhanjiang is the key poverty alleviation target in Guangdong Province.
