The Department of Tourism is one of the emerging departments of Fudan University. In 1989, the Department of History offered tourism and tourism culture courses as elective courses for undergraduates in the Department of History. In 1993, with the approval of the State Education Commission, the Department of History officially established the tourism management major. In this year, teachers from the Department of History established a tourism teaching and research section as a basic team to carry out teaching and scientific research activities in tourism, tourism economics and tourism culture. In 1995, it recruited postgraduate students for master's degree in tourism management and became one of the first universities in Shanghai to train master's degree in tourism management. In 2002, the Department of Tourism was formally established, and its party and government work was also managed by the Department of History. In 2005, the Department of Tourism and the School of Management successfully applied for a doctoral program in tourism management, and in 2006 began to recruit doctoral students in tourism management.
After more than ten years of construction, the Department of Tourism Management has developed a relatively complete range of disciplines, distinct discipline characteristics, and pioneering and innovative professional features. Currently, the Department of Tourism has 3 doctoral supervisors and 6 master's degree supervisors. Among them, the doctoral program in tourism management has three directions, with Professor Gu Xiaoming (tourism resource management), Professor Rui Mingjie (tourism economics and industry management) and Professor Su Yong (tourism management theory and strategy) serving as doctoral supervisors respectively.
The head of the Department of Tourism is concurrently served by Professor Zhang Qing, head of the Department of History. The Department of Tourism has a tourism management teaching and research section and will establish a tourism development research center (approval is pending).
In addition to the training tasks for undergraduates, masters and doctoral students majoring in tourism management at Fudan University, the Department of Tourism also undertakes undergraduate tourism management majors at the School of Online Education at Fudan University and exhibition management at the School of Adult Education at Fudan University ( Undergraduate), tourism management (undergraduate) teaching work, and has cooperated with Hainan University, Henan Provincial Tourism Bureau, Zhejiang Tourism Training Center, Ningbo Municipal Tourism Bureau, Zhoushan Municipal Organization Department and other units to offer advanced courses for tourism management master’s courses.
The Department of Tourism has 8 undergraduate graduates, with 224 graduates. Currently, there are 183 undergraduate students, 40 master’s students, and 3 doctoral students.
