History

The southern Xinjiang railway starts from Turpan in the east and reaches Kashgar in the south, with a total length of 145 kilometers. In December, 1973, under the personal examination and instructions of Premier Zhou Enlai, tens of thousands of road-building troops paved the way along the old ancient Silk Road, bridged the bridge when encountering water, overcame difficulties and obstacles, and laid the rails to Korla in eight years. The first phase of the Southern Xinjiang Railway, from Turpan to Korla, is 476 kilometers long with a total investment of RMB 1.125 billion. It was completed and put into operation in 1984. This section of railway spans the Tianshan Mountains in the middle, with the highest point of the whole line, Huste Station, at an altitude of 2,931 meters. The whole line is connected by bridges and tunnels, which is vividly called "Bridge-Tunnel Railway", with 464 large, medium and small bridges and 3 tunnels. The line twists and turns, with the middle section of 254 kilometers circuitous in the hinterland of Tianshan Mountain, and the 22‰ ramp is 194 kilometers long. The designed annual capacity of the railway is 5 million tons, and in 1996, it sent 5.221 million tons of goods, which achieved a historic breakthrough in transportation production.

Now it can directly handle passenger and cargo operations all over the country. Over the past decade or so, this section of railway has sent more than 35 million tons of goods and 8 million passengers, which has made great contributions to the stability and economic development of Xinjiang. It has been called "Unity Road, Happiness Road and Getting Rich Road" by people of all ethnic groups in southern Xinjiang.

On September 6th, 1996, the construction of the west extension project of South Xinjiang Railway-Kuka section broke ground, with a total investment of 6.22 billion yuan. Under the cordial care of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, under the correct leadership of the Ministry of Railways and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and with the strong support of party and government organizations at all levels along the South Xinjiang Railway and people of all ethnic groups, the cadres and workers of the project construction, design, construction, supervision and other units fought against the wind, sand, cold and cold. On December 1, 1998, the Kua section of the South Xinjiang Railway was put into operation, and it was opened to traffic in Kashgar on December 6, 1999, when the South Xinjiang Railway will be fully connected. One pair of passenger trains and four pairs of freight trains are tentatively scheduled for this section of the railway, with a planned transportation capacity of 12 million tons per year, which is of great significance for improving the backward traffic situation in southern Xinjiang as soon as possible and accelerating economic development.

At present, there are 168 through express trains from Korla to Xi 'an, 24 "Swan" express tourist trains from Korla to Urumqi, 761 ordinary passenger trains from Korla to Aksu and 68 through express trains from Aksu to Urumqi. Since the Southern Xinjiang Railway was opened to traffic for more than ten years, it has adhered to the safe transportation and production as the center, taking "connecting and managing a new line well and cultivating a new generation" as its mission. Nearly 1, cadres and workers have made concerted efforts to overcome all kinds of difficulties brought about by the sinister geographical environment and complex climatic conditions, created the enterprise spirit of "uniting and innovating, seeking truth from facts and forging ahead", successfully completed the transportation and production tasks, and injected vitality into the development of Tarim oil resources and the prosperity and development of Southern Xinjiang economy. In the process of defending and building the frontier, the southern Xinjiang railway plays a great role in military transportation. Especially in the western military exercises in 1994 and 1999, the South Xinjiang Railway provided a strong transportation guarantee for the complete success of the exercises with rigorous, efficient and rapid transportation methods.

Over the years, in the transportation production, Nanjiang Railway has deepened the enterprise reform, implemented the mechanism of distribution according to work, reformed the cadre system and employment system, promoted the organization reform according to the principle of "lean, pragmatic and efficient", optimized the management system of the department and section, and successfully separated and stripped the units and departments of materials, economy and life, thus enhancing the vitality of the enterprise. The quality of life in the station area has improved significantly; The diversified economy has taken shape and developed vigorously. The trackless railway stations located in Luntai, Kuqa, Hotan, Aksu and Kashgar have also achieved certain economic benefits in providing convenience for passengers and shippers. Under the guidance of Deng Xiaoping's theoretical policy of "grasping with both hands and being hard with both hands", the South Xinjiang Railway has long adhered to the coordinated development of the construction of two civilizations. The whole department belongs to 34 grass-roots units, among which 8 units such as Korla Station were named as "civilized units" by the autonomous region, and 21 units were rated as "civilized units at the railway bureau level".

Under the extremely difficult economic situation, the Southern Xinjiang Railway still takes it as its duty to promote the development of the economy and tourism in Southern Xinjiang, and it is difficult to take risks, with a loan of 7 million yuan to buy a double-decker air-conditioned sleeper train. On January 1st, 1999, the "Swan" tourist train was replaced by an advanced luxury double-decker air-conditioned sleeper bus in China. The appearance of the train was greatly improved when the double-decker air-conditioned sleeper train was put into operation. The high-grade hardware facilities and high-quality all-round service made passengers enjoy the ride more perfectly. No.368 and No.367 express trains of South Xinjiang Railway also entered the ranks of "civilized trains in the autonomous region", and established a good railway image in the society.
