Isn't there a mountain in America with the heads of five great men?
Stone Carving Mountain-Rushmore Mountain
In Montenegro, South Dakota, USA, there is a Mount Rushmore with a height of 1 0,800 meters, on which four huge stone statues of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln are engraved. The face of the stone statue is1.8m high and the nose is 6m long. The four colossus seem to grow in the mountains, which are like elephants. The colossus blends with the surrounding lakes and mountains, forming a famous tourist attraction. Every year, more than 2 million tourists from all over the world come here to enjoy this behemoth.
The statue on the mountain gazes at the countryside in Montenegro in the distance. Unlike the stone statues on Easter Island or the sphinx in front of the ancient Egyptian pyramids, Mount Rushmore statues are relatively modern masterpieces in the 20th century, because they were only carved in the period of 1927- 194 1.
The carvings on the mountain are the heads of four American presidents on the cliff. They are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, theodore roosevelt and abraham lincoln. Each head is about18m high, which is equivalent to the height of five floors.
History of the statue:
The colossus of Mount Rushmore can be said to be a masterpiece of human sculpture in the 20th century. It was created by Shazian Boglon, a famous American artist. 1927, President Coolidge announced that Mount Rushmore would be turned into a national memorial, and the carving project began. At that time, Pogron was over 60 years old, but he devoted all his efforts and energy to this unprecedented artistic masterpiece, and the whole project was intermittent because of funds and weather. 194 1 year, at the end of the project, the master of art Boglong died. His son Lincoln followed in his father's footsteps and finally completed the world-famous project at the end of 194 1.
The four giant statues on Mount Rushmore vividly depict the image characteristics and demeanor of the four presidents.
Washington is like a bust, its head is carved into a circle. From the collar part, it transitions to relief. The collar on the right is engraved with relief patterns, retaining the original mountain shape. The collar on the left is embossed, and the shoulders and chest are roughly carved because of the mountain shape. Therefore, the image of the five senses on the head of the whole statue is prominent, clear and concentrated. I can only see Washington looking at the distance peacefully, his mouth closed and his brow slightly locked, showing a serious and determined expression, as if he were full of confidence in victory. Washington's portrait is the only bust among the four giant portraits, and the other three are only carved with heads.
On the left of Washington statue is Jefferson statue. Jefferson was one of the famous drafters of the Declaration of Independence. This statue highlights his elegance and wisdom as a pioneer of American national and democratic revolution. His hair is bent, his forehead is prominent, his eyes are bright, his head is slightly tilted, his mouth is slightly sipped, and his courage and strength are revealed from his leisure.
The statue of Roosevelt is located on the left of the statue of Jefferson. He and Lincoln only carved their faces, and the back of their heads was connected with the Rocky Mountains, but their necks and chests were not carved. Roosevelt's head and jaw were slightly closed, his lips were covered with a thick and short moustache, his eyes were deep, his eyebrows were locked, his face was angular, and he wore a pair of beautiful glasses, which was in sharp contrast to the resolute shapes of Washington and Jefferson.
The leftmost of the four statues is Lincoln, a great man deeply loved by black Americans and the lower classes. This statue highlights his serious personality.
This group of giant statues not only highlights everyone's personality characteristics, but also skillfully combines them into a unified composition. If arranged in chronological order, Roosevelt should be behind Lincoln, but for artistic reasons, Roosevelt is placed on Lincoln's right side, which makes it more different from the statues on both sides. Although the faces of the four statues are not facing a focus, they all look at the distance and are arranged at the same height. The horizontal lines below the neck of the three statues on the left are all coherent, hiding the chests and shoulders of three people, blending with each other and organically unifying, strengthening the connection between form and god.
The composition of the stone carvings on Mount Rushmore has changed many times, mainly because the granite in the inner layer of the rock has cracks or flaws. Because it is difficult to find the rock condition of the inner layer outside, the composition has to be changed when carving the inner layer. 1On July 4th, 930, the statue of Washington was completed for the first time, and then there was great trouble in carving the statue of Jefferson. The location of the statue was changed again and again until August 30 1936. Since then, Lincoln stone statue was completed in September 1937, and Roosevelt stone statue was completed on July 2 1939. In the whole project, nine major changes were made, and more than 65,438+10,000 tons of stones were removed. After the completion of the four statues, Pokron put himself into the overall treatment to strengthen the connection between the four statues and make this group of statues more harmonious. 1941March 6th, Bogren died before the project was completely completed.
In the process of stone carving, modern blasting technology was adopted. After careful calculation, the rock after explosion is only 2.5 cm away from the finished product, which shows the exquisite directional blasting technology. It is also for this reason that some people say that these four statues were blown out by explosives. The stone statue of Mount Rushmore can be said to be a combination of science and sculpture.
In order to show respect for the four presidents and prevent the statue from being damaged, Mount Rushmore is forbidden for tourists to climb. Visitors can see stone statues on the observation deck at the foot of the mountain. From June to September every year, in order to let tourists enjoy this masterpiece of art at night, there are also lighting facilities to watch the stone carvings under the light, which naturally has some fun and special artistic effects.
