The predecessor of Zhengyi Academy was "Zhengyi Bookstore", located in Xinmeili, Fuzhou (today's Huangxiang, Fuzhou). It was founded by Zuo Zongtang, the governor of Fujian and Zhejiang in the fifth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1866). During the establishment of the bookstore, there were some achievements, and a total of 525 volumes were produced, collectively titled "The Complete Book of Zhengyi Hall". Later, Yinggui, the general who suppressed Fujian at that time, accepted the suggestions of Shen Baozhen and Yang Qingchen and reorganized it into Zhengyi Academy. The academy was located in Luoshepu, Fuzhou (today's former site of the Provincial Library in Dongjiekou). Zhengyi Academy was founded in the ninth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1870), taking the meaning of the words of Dong Zhongshu, a great scholar of the Han Dynasty, "to correct one's friendship without seeking one's own benefit". The academy later merged with Fengchi Academy and was renamed Quanmin University Hall. Now it is also regarded as the predecessor of Fuzhou No. 1 Middle School.
