What are the rules for traveling to Tibet with an American passport?
Tibet entry policy
Considering Tibet's traffic conditions, tourist service facilities and reception capacity, as well as the protection of Tibet's ethnic traditions, cultural monuments and ecological environment, the government encourages group tours, and those without Chinese mainland identity cards (including tourists from Taiwan Province Province and foreign tourists) must obtain permission to enter Tibet.
Passports and visas Except for countries that are exempt from visas in China, foreign tourists or mountaineers must hold valid passports and visas issued by the Embassy of China when traveling in Tibet.
In addition to ordinary visas, foreign tourists who want to travel in Tibet must also hold an approval letter issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau.
Procedures for entering Tibet
Overseas tourists:
Need a confirmation letter to enter Tibet. I need to provide my passport (or Taiwanese certificate) and my visa or copy when I apply for a certificate. The contents include: name, gender, age, nationality, occupation, passport number, visa type and validity period.
Foreigners who are government officials, diplomats and journalists must go through relevant formalities and arrange reception in Tibet.
Foreign guests traveling in Tibet must be organized, that is, they must have a reception unit and a definite travel itinerary, and go to the office of Tibet Tourism Bureau to handle the "Confirmation Letter of Entering Tibet". With this confirmation letter, they can go to the airline to buy tickets to Tibet and check in. Overseas Chinese, Taiwan compatriots and foreign guests need to apply for a "confirmation of entry into Tibet". Compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao can travel to Tibet like domestic guests with valid home visit permits, and there is no need to apply for a "confirmation letter for entering Tibet". Foreign guests, overseas Chinese and Taiwan compatriots may go to the office of Tibet Tourism Bureau or entrust a travel agency with their valid passports (photocopies), visas (photocopies) and personal work certificates. Generally, you can go through the formalities within one week, and it will be expedited for 2-3 days.
