The evolution of names

In the Song Dynasty, Lantau Island and Hong Kong Island were collectively called Daxi Mountain. This name was first seen in Wang Xiang's Ji Sheng in the Land in the Song Dynasty. Its cloud says: "Daxi Mountain: In the sea of Dongguan County, there are 36 islands, and residents make a living by fishing for salt." In ancient times, the word "Xi" referred to people who were enslaved. Until the Ming Dynasty, the Daxi Mountain only referred to Lantau Island in a narrow sense, such as "The Unified Scenic Spots of Daming" compiled by Cao Xuequan in Chongzhen.

Lantau island

It said: "Daxi Mountain, in the South China Sea of the county, is surrounded by 36 islands and goes back more than 300 miles."

Lantau Island is also known as Daxi Mountain, Judas Mountain, Dayu Mountain, Dayu Mountain, Nantou Island, Lantau Island, Tuen Mun Island, Dahao Mountain and Dahao Island. The English name of Lantau Island is believed to be a transliteration of Cantonese for "rotten head" or "Nantou". Although the Cantonese pronunciation of "Yu" is the same as that of "zeoi6", "Lantau Island" is pronounced as "yu4". This is because the old names of Lantau Island, such as "Big Fish", "Dayu" and "Dayu", all sound like "fish", and the name "Lantau Island" was the official name that only started in the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty.

Early development

Lantau Island was inhabited as early as the Stone Age. Archaeologists have unearthed pottery, fishing tools and weapons at that time, and the existing stone carvings in the diversion stone circle and stone wall are the remains at that time.

At the end of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Lu Xun, the leader of the local rebel army, led his men to flee to Lantau to settle down. Later generations made salt by fishing, and later became a civilian branch. But at that time, there was also a legend that there was a half-man, half-fish creature on the island called Lu Ting.

During the Southern Song Dynasty, with the establishment of Guanfu Farm in Kowloon, the court explicitly cracked down on salt smuggling, which led to the local salt people's turmoil in the third year of Qingyuan in Song Ningzong (1 197), which was known as the Daxishan salt people's uprising in history. Later, the unrest was suppressed, all the insurgents were killed, and the salt industry declined from then on. On the other hand, in the second year of Baodou (1254), Li founded Panyu with 300 restaurants.

Lantau island

Mui Mei (now Mui Wo) on Lantau Island is also one of its food cities.

At the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, the Song court was forced to exile at sea. It took Song Duanzong Jingyan two years and three years (1277 and 1278). They stayed on Lantau Island twice and made short stops in Mui Mei (now Mui Wo) and Tung Chung. In March of Jing Yan's third year, Duan lived on the north shore of Lantau Island and died. Min inherited the throne and then fled to Xinhui.

Ming and Qing dynasties

During the Zheng De period of Ming Dynasty, the French (now Portugal) harassed Tuen Mun and set up a stronghold in Tai O, Lantau Island. In the sixteenth year of Zheng De (152 1), a naval battle broke out in Tuen Mun, and the French retreated from Lantau Island.

In the Qing Dynasty, the Gulong Waterway north of Lantau Island became the only channel for foreign businessmen to trade with Guangzhou. In order to prevent opium trade and pirate invasion, the imperial court set up a castle in Tung Chung in the 12th year of Daoguang (1832), which is now called Tung Chung Castle. In the 25th year of Guangxu reign (1899), the New Territories, including the whole Lantau Island, was leased by the British in accordance with the Special Provisions on Expanding the Boundary of Hong Kong, and the southern boundary pillar of Lantau Island was set up on the island to show British sovereignty.

Before 1990, the Hong Kong colonial government never carried out large-scale development on Lantau Island. From 65438 to 0989, the then Governor of Hong Kong, MacLehose, announced the "Airport Core Plan", connecting Lantau Island with land transportation by the airport railway and the Lantau Link, and Lantau Island began to carry out large-scale construction.

War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression

During World War II, the Japanese army began to attack Hong Kong on 194 1. 1940 In September, the children of the indigenous inhabitants of the New Territories, under the leadership of the Guangdong People's Anti-Japanese Guerrilla (formerly the Guangdong People's Anti-Japanese Guerrilla) under the leadership of the Chinese Production Party, formed the Hong Kong and Kowloon Brigade of Dongjiang Column to organize forces to resist the Japanese invasion of China. It was not until the British Hong Kong government surrendered to the Japanese army and Hong Kong fell that the Hong Kong Kowloon Brigade continued to wage guerrilla warfare with the Japanese army. April 1942 Members of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Brigade strengthened their control over Lantau Island and strengthened their ties with Macao and Guangzhou.

Modern development

David Wilson, then Governor, announced the Airport Core Plan and decided to develop a new airport at Chek Lap Kok. Tung Chung in the northwest of Lantau Island has developed into a new town in North Lantau Island, which is connected with land transportation outside the island by the Airport Express Line, Tung Chung Line and Lantau Link, and a large number of constructions have started in Lantau Island.
