At an altitude of 3197m, Qinghai Lake is the largest saltwater lake in China. Around the lake, it passes through Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Haixi Mongolian Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, all of which are high-grade highways with excellent road conditions. There is basically no altitude sickness when riding in this area. Cycling around Qinghai Lake does not need to compete for equipment and physical strength like other outdoor activities, because the road conditions are good and the altitude fluctuation is not great. You just need to make corresponding preparations in advance and go on the road with a happy mood. Along the way, you will not only feel the beautiful scenery, but also the folk customs and religious beliefs along the way will infect you at any time.

The total length of the road around Qinghai Lake is 360 kilometers (starting from Xihai Town and returning to Xihai Town), and the four roads around Lake are connected in a circle, namely, Huanhu West Road-Huanhu North Road-Huanhu East Road-Huanhu South Road. The whole journey around the lake is not 1 km, so you can know exactly how far you rode that day and how far you are from your destination.

July is the most beautiful season in Qinghai Lake, with blue water and fragrant cauliflower. However, it is recommended to miss the annual Lake Tournament, otherwise it will be hard to find food and accommodation and it will be much higher, even if you only miss 1 day.

Attractions along the way:

Qinghai Lake-the lake is quiet and blue, and it is the largest saltwater lake in China. Surrounding the lake is a high-grade highway. Every summer, golden rape flowers are all over the lakeshore, and wild flowers are in full bloom. The annual international cycling race around Qinghai Lake is held in July, so this is definitely the best season for cycling around the lake.

Bird Island-named after hundreds of thousands of migratory birds inhabiting the island. The top of the island is 7.6 meters above the lake, and there are many birds, about 80,000 to 90,000. This is the hereditary territory of spotted geese, fish gulls and brown-necked gulls. Here, with flat terrain, mild climate, surrounded by water on three sides, quiet environment, lush aquatic plants and abundant fish, it is a natural place for birds to thrive.

Xihai Town-atomic city in the past, a neat and quiet town. Under the hillside in the north is the beautiful Jinyintan grassland. It was here that Wang met a girl from Zhuo Ma and wrote a famous article "In that faraway place".

Gangcha county, a vast grassland, has developed animal husbandry since ancient times and is rich in aquatic plants. It is known as the "paradise" and is one of the key pastoral areas around the lake in Qinghai Province. It is a place dominated by Tibetans, where Tibetan, Han, Mongolian, Hui and Salar people live together.

These two scenic spots are not on the road around the lake

Daotang River-3300 meters above sea level. Located at the intersection of Qinghai-Tibet and Qingkang highways, it originated in Chahan grassland at the foot of Sun Moon Mountain. All the rivers in our country are "one river flows east", and only this river flows west, which is called odd, so it is named "Daotang River". It is the smallest branch of Qinghai Lake water system.

Sun Moon Mountain-3250 meters above sea level. Sun Moon Mountain is located in the fortress, the situation is severe and dangerous, and its strategic position is very important. It is famous for three reasons: first, the beautiful and moving legend that Princess Wencheng married Tibet; Second, Sun Moon Mountain is the dividing line between agricultural area and animal husbandry area, monsoon and non-monsoon, outflow area and inflow area, and it is also the westernmost edge of the Loess Plateau. Third, Sun Moon Mountain has always been the throat of the mainland's access to the western part of Qinghai-Tibet. The Tang Dynasty was the boundary between Tang and Fan. It is an important border and commercial port on the Tang-Fan passage, and it is also a bridge for friendly exchanges between the Han nationality and the ethnic minorities in the Central Plains.

Line design and schedule:

D0？ Xining-Xihai Town (106 km), this section can also be taken by bus, and the time around the lake is not counted, so it is D0.

This section is the plateau climbing stage, and the highest altitude of the highway is 3500 meters. You can ride a bike or take a bus.

D 1？ Xihai Town-Jinsha Bay-Hudong Farm-Qinghai Lake Fishing Ground-15 1 base-Jiangxi ditch (100 km), hilly section.

Starting from Xihai Town, it is expected to be completed in 6 hours. Follow Gangcha Road, all the way to the south. After riding for about 40 kilometers, you can see the lake about 2 kilometers on the right. After 40 kilometers, there is a sand dune where many tourists from go on road trip ride sand, horse and yak. It is not difficult to go up and down slightly all the way. It takes nearly an hour to ride to the national highway near 2 18 for more than ten kilometers. National Highway 2 18 is the main traffic artery in Qinghai, and there are many trucks entering and leaving, so it is forbidden to ride close to the roadside.

D2？ Jiangxi ditch-Heimahe-Shinaihai-Bird Island (95km, mainly in gentle section)

After about 50 kilometers, I arrived at the Heimahe toll station and rode on the road around the lake again. The road is fresh, without the interference of trucks, the whole world suddenly clears up. The next ten kilometers are full of pastoral Tibetan customs, and many places can ride directly to the lake and visit Qinghai Lake at close range.

D3？ Bird Island-Buha River-Qinghai-Tibet Railway-Quanji-gangcha county-Hargeer 28 (93km, mainly in gentle sections).

About two kilometers away from Gangcha, it is a difficult uphill. After reaching the top of the slope, it is more than 20 kilometers downhill and a flat road leading to Hargil Township. (Mainly due to poor accommodation after crossing Bird Island, D3 and D4 can be combined into 1 day. )

D4？ Hallgeir-Ganzi River-Dezhou-Xihai Town (60km, with three long slopes and many ups and downs)

This day's road has been far away from Qinghai Lake, and the lake is almost completely invisible. So the last ride, and finally merge D3 and D4 into 1 day, is easy to complete. On the way, we also stopped to take pictures many times and arrived in Xihai Town at 5 pm. Another reason is that the accommodation conditions behind Bird Island are poor and I don't want to live more. Of course, the main reason is that this section is far from Qinghai Lake, and there is not much scenery to see.

Necessities: helmet, gloves, change of clothes (it's cold in the morning and evening, you need down jacket or jacket), thermos cup (it's not good to drink cold water at plateau), camera.
