What are the three largest bookstores in Beijing?
There are a lot of them for you to choose from!
1. Xinhua Bookstore (General Distribution Office). Recommendation level: 1 star (out of five stars)
The general distribution office of Xinhua Bookstore is located near Chegongzhuang, a short walk southwest from Guanguan Bridge. I only went there a few times during my freshman year, usually buying gifts for friends and rarely buying books for myself. The bookstore is very big, like a big warehouse. The interior is messy and the books are placed on wooden shelves. It feels like a supermarket. At that time, there was a 20% discount, and there were even many half-price books. Xinhua Bookstore had discounts, which seemed to be rare. I don't have a deep affection for this place. There is no environment for buying books. Everywhere is messy. The toilet is hard to find, dirty and smelly.
2. Xidan Book Building. Recommendation level: 3 stars
Xidan Book Building, Xinhua Bookstore in Xidan. The location is on the east side of Xidan Cultural Plaza and is very large. Known as the largest bookstore in China, it has the fifth floor. Of course, Wangfujing Bookstore has more floors than him, and some netizens said that a bookstore in Shanghai has seven floors. But in fact, these two bookstores are smaller than Xidan Book Building. Every floor of the Xidan Book Building makes you feel like you can't see anywhere at a glance, and it occupies a quite large area. There is no way to compare with Wangfujing Bookstore. At the beginning, a lot of money was thrown at Xidan Book Building. The scale is large, and the variety of books will be quite complete. The various categories of books are very complex and complete. The business-only Chinese-translated classics counter is one and a half people tall, with three counters in total. Science and technology books are also very complete, and various versions of textbooks on various subjects can be purchased here. There are often many bookworms sitting on the ground, holding a pile of books. They often sit there all day long, which is very interesting. Most of the bookworms sit near the wall, which generally does not block traffic. However, the academic shelves are placed against the wall, so it will cause inconvenience to those who choose books. The sales of books are also quite high, and I often see many people carrying a cart full of books. It is said that this kind of bookstore buys a lot of books every week, but the specific date of the books is unclear. Books are often out of stock, but the out-of-stock books will appear on the shelves soon, and there is no need to register for lack of books. It took a lot of trouble to buy "Historical Research" at that time, and I went there several times without success. A week later, he blatantly put it on the shelf again, and a week after that, it was out of stock again.
The bookstore is large, so it has many shortcomings. Several book friends generally believe that the bookstore owners are not good enough, which can be seen from the books they choose to display in conspicuous places. The variety of books is very comprehensive, but in terms of individual categories, it is definitely not as good as various more professional bookstores, such as China Bookstore, Jiuzhang, Halloween, etc. Some of the more marginal books are hard to find here. The horizontal classification of bookstores is very detailed, but the vertical classification is insufficient. Except for the Commercial Press, which has a special shelf for books, there are no special shelves for other publishers. Books are arranged by category, but not by series. Sometimes if you want to buy books in the same series, you often have to go to several sections. The bookstore is big, but its temper is bad. Even the staff at the information desk ignore it. The bookstore never offers discounts. Unless you purchase books for over 200 yuan a day, they will give you a 10% discount. Many people came to buy books, but they included a group of people who bought books not because the company had just given out book purchase cards as a benefit, so they drove their cars to use up all the book purchase cards. Xidan Book Building has added a lot of impetuosity to this increasingly impetuous society because it has sold too many best-selling books.
3.Wangfujing Bookstore. Recommendation level: 2 stars
The replica of Xidan Book Building, although it has seven floors, is smaller in scale. Perhaps because it is in a famous tourist attraction, the first floor is filled with travel books. On a smaller scale, he was willing to put books in the same series together.
4. Halloween Book Garden. Recommendation level: 5 stars
Halloween Book Garden is the place where I throw the most money. It is located on the north side of Lanqiying Station Road, two stops away from the east gate of Peking University. Divided into upper and lower floors. The lower level sells discounted books, and the upper level suddenly becomes enlightened. Halloween Book Garden is a very professional cultural book spot. The bookstore is much quieter than in Xidan or Wangfujing. Although it looks inconspicuous from the outside, it is actually well-equipped inside. The entire second floor is very large, with one floor after another, leaving you dizzying. The boss is said to be a very classy person, so the books inside are also very classy. The boss even arranges special counters according to the content of the books, such as "Foreigners See China", even though these books are not a series or even a publisher. The north side is classified in detail according to philosophy, history, culture, etc.; on the right side are rows of publishing areas, including the most famous publishing houses such as Zhonghua Book Company, Sanlian, Commerce, Guangxi Normal University, etc. The literature and science section is on the west side, with several very deep rooms. Buying books at Halloween Book Garden is a pleasure. The environment is elegant and quiet, and the books are appropriately classified, making it perfect for quick selection. The quality of the books in the book garden is very good. Some books have not been seen elsewhere, but they are also available here, and they are definitely good books. The waiters in the book garden are also very dedicated, and some are very professional and have many books in mind. The bookstore has a POS machine. When I went to Halloween for the first time, it was already afternoon. I visited a lot of bookstores in the morning, carrying a backpack full of books. I planned to walk around in a hurry and leave, but after I arrived, I completely forgot about my hunger and fatigue. I had no money at that time, so I used the POS machine, which was very convenient.
5. Hanfen Tower.
Recommendation level: 4 stars
Hanfenlou is the former sales department of the Commercial Press. It is located about 500 meters north of Xindong'an, Wangfujing. It is also a very large bookstore. The books on the upper level are messy and miscellaneous, and all the good stuff is on the ground floor. The north side of the underground is the classification area, and the south side is the special area for each publishing house. To be honest, I feel that the classification area in Hanfen Building is not very good. The classification is very mixed. The number of books stored in each area is very small, and some are placed under the bookcases in a mess. The south is a very valuable place. After all, it is the sales department of commerce. Books that are out of stock in other places will naturally not be lacking in commerce. There are some books that you can't find in many places, but you can find them here. There is also a 50% off area inside the business, selling some damaged or used books. Hanfenlou is even more famous than Xidan. If you buy a membership card for RMB 200 at a time, you can get a 9.1% discount on the membership card! From now on, every additional RMB 100 you spend on books will get a 0.1% discount. However, the book shopping environment is elegant and quiet, and it is backed by a publishing house. It is still a favorite for book lovers.
6. Canran Bookstore. Recommendation level: 3 stars
The Zhonghua Book Company version of Hanfen Tower, so it has the characteristics of Hanfen Tower. The location is closely connected to Hanfen Tower, so every time you go to Hanfen Tower, you might as well stop by. .
7. Reader Service Department of Renmin University Press. Recommendation level: 2 stars
The Reader Service Department of Renmin University Press is located in the northeast corner of Renmin University. The bookstore is very complex and has distinctive features. You can find very old books from Renmin University Press. Although the Renmin University Press is not as famous as Commerce, Peking University, Sanlian, and Guangxi Normal University, it is still worthy of mention. The location is not far away. If you want some NPC books but can't find them elsewhere, you can come and have a look.
8. Haidian Book City (above ground part). Recommendation level: 3 stars
Haidian Book City is a mixed place, a mess, like a golden five-star. In addition to being dirty and messy, it is also as cheap as a gold star. Moreover, although Jin Wuxing is in chaos, there are hidden dragons and crouching tigers. Similarly, Haidian Book City also has hidden dragons and crouching tigers. A typical example is Jiuzhang Bookstore. The boss of Jiuzhang is a great person and is interested in mathematics, so he built such a mathematics bookstore. The bookstore is not big, but it is very famous and attracts many mathematics enthusiasts. The classification in the bookstore is based on the sub-disciplines within mathematics. It’s messy, but the discounts are huge, so it’s great for students. Most of the bookstores in the Book City are geared towards students, and all kinds of professional books and teaching aids are discounted, so you can save some money by visiting them and buying textbooks and teaching aids. Bookstores are generally not big, so books are slow to come in and sales are limited. Once I lost a book from the library. If I couldn't find the exact same book, I would have to pay three times the price. I looked everywhere for that copy (it seemed to be from 1999) but couldn't find it. Finally, I found it in the corner of a small bookstore on the second floor of Haidian Book City. Not only did I save twice the compensation, but it also got a discount. I was so moved that I wanted to cry.
9. Guolin style. Recommendation level: 3 stars
Guolinfeng is also a well-known cultural bookstore. The bookstore makes its own internal rankings, but unfortunately the ones on the list are always novels like Annie's Baby, or business and management books like "Rich Dad", or some "life philosophy" and other inspirational books. These books can be compared with Comparable to what doctors call "junk food." If Xidan Book Building is compared to a French meal, then Halloween Bookstore is an exquisite "Chinese Food" and Guolinfeng is a fast food restaurant. Nowadays, the business of fast food restaurants is getting more and more popular. The scale of Guolinfeng seems to be large, but a large part of it is occupied by "junk food", and the Shi Zhe part is compressed. It is worth mentioning that Guolinfeng’s literary area occupies the entire southern half of the area. There are all kinds of complete works, criticisms, summaries, and annotations in it, which can be said to be a must-have for military strategists. There are a lot of waiters at Guolinfeng, and most of them have nothing to do. They chat in groups and even flirt, which is very unpleasant. The boss of Guolinfeng is said to be very capable, but I wonder if he has sold so many management books just for literature, but he has never read them himself. It is recommended that Guolinfeng streamline its organization, eliminate redundant staff, and require clerks to study themselves.
Forgot to mention, Guolinfeng is located underground in Haidian Book City. You can get 9.5% off when you spend over 100 yuan.
10. Agarwood Bookstore. Recommendation level: 3 stars
Agarwood Bookstore is an academic bookstore opened by a young man. The owner is a kind of person who lives in poverty and loves morality. He does not expand his business and does not sell best-selling books. He only sells academic books, which makes many students afraid to ask. Attracted some bookworms. The bookstore offers a 50% discount, and if you have a good relationship with the boss, you can even get a 40% discount. Most of the books in the bookstore are sourced from second-hand book stalls and special price sections of publishing houses with the help of the boss's discernment. The bookstore is only 10 square meters, and the books are very miscellaneous, so you need to browse slowly. Although they are old books, they are the kind of "primary books" that have not been read or written on. This kind of bookstore is only suitable for those who are dedicated to academics, have already read a certain amount of books, and buy books to broaden their horizons and use them as research materials. There were not many books that I could buy or read, so I went there just to chat with the boss and gain some knowledge. It is said that many cultural celebrities gather in Halloween Cafe, and many hermit-like bookworms gather here.
Agarwood Bookstore is located in Room 802, Building 13, Furongli Community, outside the west gate of Peking University, half price!
11. Changchang Culture Bookstore. Recommendation level: 4 stars
Changchang Culture Bookstore is hard to find.
Come out of Haidian Book City, across the Haidian Bridge, and head north, in a warehouse behind the Peking University Resource Building. The bookstore owner seems like a rough guy. The terrible thing is that the prices of books here are outrageous. Some book friends have said before that you should be fully mentally prepared before coming to Changchang, because you will find that you have spent too much money in vain. Most of the books here are from Business, Sanlian, and Zhonghua Book Company. Most of them are half price, and there are also 45% off and 40% off. The books I have bought before (mostly at full price or 10% off) can be purchased here at 50% off. Being a bookworm requires a certain amount of determination and a balanced mentality, and you must decide that wasted money spent on books cannot be considered wasted money. The books are a bit worn, but there are many old books. Some books that cannot be bought in big bookstores can be found here, so why does it have a small sales volume? I found an old book that I had been looking for for a long time at the Peking University Weekend Cultural Market. I was so happy that I found a treasure. When I paid for it, I found out that it was a stall of Changchang Cultural Bookstore.
It is worth mentioning that there is an unlisted second-hand bookstore next to Changchang. When you enter the door, there are original books and magazines on the left, and some out-of-print old books on the right. There is weird music playing in the bookstore, and the owner is wearing weird light makeup. It's really a bit goosebumps for a person to search for books there. I didn't dare to ask about the ones on the left. Most of them were French, German, Russian and Hebrew. The prices on the right were not good. I saw a set of Oxford Chinese People's Liberation Army and National History in the 1980s. The price was not high. The asking price was 40 per book. I bit it. Gritting my teeth, I didn’t buy it. In the corner of the bookstore, there has been a complete set of "Dushu" magazines for many years.
12. Boyatang Bookstore + Sinology Bookstore + Yecao Bookstore. Recommendation level: 4 and a half stars
Not every bookstore can give a five-star recommendation casually. Even three bookstores that can be regarded as four-stars combined cannot compare. Last Halloween. The three bookstores are located on the Peking University campus, so their positioning is destined. The bookstore is located in an underground supermarket next to Building 45 of Peking University. The three bookstores are closely connected, so there is probably competition. They used to offer 20% off, but when I went there it was 25% off. There is a large part of the half-price section in Weeds, and the terrible thing is that many good books have been lost in the half-price section. I bought a set of three books by Krishnamurti at half price at Yecao and I am very satisfied. The Sinology Bookstore was inscribed by Ji Xianlin. There are mountains and seas of books inside, which are piled up in a mess. However, the quality of the books is very good, which makes people feel that they are worth searching for. The Boya Hall is not very large, but the bookshelf is quite high. Only large books can be placed at the top, and the titles of small books cannot be clearly seen. The waiters carry ladders with them and are always on hand. Boyatang’s recommended book series is worth choosing carefully. After turning to Sinology, you will find another Boya Hall, which is full of books about China, history and literature, vast and majestic. People have to sigh, this is Peking University.
13. The third wave of bookstores. Recommendation level: 4 stars
Third Wave Bookstore comes from a distinguished background. It used to be a branch of All Saints, but now it is independent. It is said that the boss was originally one of All Saints' employees. It is located outside the west gate of Peking University and outside the small gate inside the main gate of Haidian Gymnasium. It doesn't look like much from the outside, with a small facade, but when you go inside, you'll find it has a lot of depth. The third wave comes from a well-known family, but does not have the airs of a famous family. Books are sold at 20% off, and sometimes there are special sales weeks and so on. There are two things that moved me about the third wave of bookstores. One is to find the last set of Locke's "On Human Understanding" inside. I only saw the second volume of this book in Hanfenlou, but not the first volume. I only saw the first volume in Guolinfeng. The administrator refused to sell it to me because there was no price tag on the previous volume. He said it was a set of books, although there was no other volume. Half but still not sold alone, there was a stalemate for a long time. Second, it is rare that a bookstore has a whole shelf of books from Guangxi Normal University Press (a publisher I like very much). Although it is not as big as Halloween, it has discounts and books to buy, so it is a place worth visiting frequently.
14. Taoshu Garden. Recommendation level: 3 stars
Taoshuyuan is located at the west gate of Beijing Normal University. It is also a good place. It is a blessing to be next to Beijing Normal University. The bookstore offers a 20% discount. Generally, as long as the book is not very special, you can find it here. The book is not particularly comprehensive and the volume is not particularly large, but it can definitely meet the initial needs. The bookstore has a lot of small stools that you can sit on casually. Several waiters looked very pleasing to the eye.
15. Xuepin Bookstore. Recommendation level: 4 stars
Xuepin is slightly larger than Taoshuyuan, and is about the same size as the Third Wave Bookstore. Usually 20% off, located on the second floor of an orange building south of Nanshui House and opposite Heli House. The internal classification of the bookstore is also simpler and clearer than that of Taoshuyuan. The recommendation area in the middle of the bookstore is also a place worth studying.
Generally speaking, the six bookstores from Boya to Xuepin are similar, and it is impossible to tell which one is better or worse.
16. Liulichang. Recommendation level: 4 stars
Get off the Hepingmen subway in Liulichang and head south. There are many bookstores scattered around.
Chinese Bookstore. If you have visited Haidian Book City or the Chinese Bookstore in Xidan first, you may lose interest in this brand. If you come back to several Chinese bookstores in Liulichang, your impression of him will definitely change completely. This Sui Yaqi can definitely be regarded as a representative of the splendid Chinese civilization. It is filled with biographies of various celebrities, local chronicles, archaeological records, and large tracts of famous calligraphy works and fine arts. It can be said to be a treasure land for those who study Chinese civilization. There are two full bookcases of books on religious subjects alone, not to mention history and literature.
The southern section of the bookstore is dedicated to thread-bound books and ancient books. There are also some euphemistically called special-price books. The original price is a few yuan or even a few cents, but the price is in the tens.
There is only one ancient book bookstore in Liulichang, and it is not small. The bookstore is divided into many small rooms. Walking around inside is like a Suzhou garden, with winding paths leading to tranquility. When you turn around, you will find another scene in front of you. There are a large number of books in it that ordinary people would not dare to read. They are priced at tens of thousands, and they tell you that they are on sale. This kind of book can only be read (only by the cover, of course) to satisfy your eyes. High-priced books are carefully stored, waiting to be picked up by researchers, collectors, and big-spending bookworms. The bookstore still has some books for daily use, but they are very incomplete. There are only a limited number of business classics translated into Chinese, and some complete sets of pamphlets only have part of them. You can find many counters of marginal publishing houses in bookstores, such as ancient books or literature and history publishing houses in various provinces, and school-run publishing houses of various liberal arts schools.
Liulichang also has a sales department of the Commercial Press, but it only sells high-end calligraphy and painting and dictionary books. It is small in scale but very elegantly decorated. This kind of bookstore is only used as a tourist spot. face.
17. Peking University Weekend Cultural Market. Recommendation level: 2 stars
Around Building 46-47 of Peking University, there are piles of bookstalls every weekend. The bookstalls are also a mixed bag, with some reference books, textbooks, and pirated bestsellers. There are also some academic books and foreign language originals, which need to be carefully searched by book buyers.
In addition, there are intermittent students selling used books at Beijing Normal University, but the quality of the books is much worse.
18. Buyi Bookstore. Recommendation level: 3 stars
In fact, Buyi Bookstore is a very good place to sell used books. It is not small in scale and the quality of the goods is also very good. It’s just a little far away, so I’ve only been there once. Buyi Bookstore has an online platform that can provide mail order business, but it is very troublesome, and not all books can be accessed online in a timely manner, so it is naturally better to go to the site to select books. I've only been there once and I almost died from exhaustion. Take the subway to Jianguomen, exit the station and head south, keep walking, bypass the Dongbianmen with ninety-eight bends, and then go southeast until Guangqumen, there is Lingxing International, Buyi Bookstore is located in Lingxing International Room 1703, Unit 1, Building 3. There are old books inside, the prices are not high, and there are also some ancient books. There are some books that you can’t find on the market now, you can go there and read them. There I found Hong Qian's "Selected Materials on the Philosophy of Contemporary Capitalism", which is very valuable, as well as an old version of Nietzsche's "The Will to Power". I bought it at a very low price that is still being sold in the market, but the quality of the book is just the same. It looks a little worse.
19. Sanlian Taofen Book Center. Recommendation level: 4 stars
Sanlian has always been a very good publishing house, but its recent publishing power is not satisfactory, or it cannot satisfy me. Sanlian has special shelves in many small bookstores, but the books on the special shelves feel less and less, and they are often some recent domestic "research results". It feels very impetuous to browse through them. Only in Sanlian Taofen Book Center can you feel what it means to be in full swing and what it means to be a skinny camel bigger than a horse. The entire southwestern corner of Sanlian's basement is filled with Sanlian books. The same goes for Sanlian and Business. There are a lot of "life wisdom", "inspirational" and "business management" books on the first floor, and the really good books are placed on the ground floor. What's better than the business store is that there are still some new book promotions on the first floor. The books are carefully selected and placed with careful attention to details, so that when you enter the door, you will feel that it is indeed "Sanlian" rather than the best-selling products on the street. Book store. The book shopping environment in the basement is very nice and reminds me of Halloween. If you linger around with a few selected books, you will soon lose track of time. The underground has also classified some books into secondary categories, just like Halloween, making it very convenient to choose. And some of the best products have been selected and placed on prominent shelves. The stairs of Sanlian were crowded with people, and there was a notice hanging on the stairs: "Please do not sit against the stair railings." It was basically a default, or a reminder that you can sit and read on the stairs, so on the stairs The bookworms have become a part of the scenery in Sanlian. It is worth mentioning that the guardrails on the stairs reminded me of the European guardrails in villas in TV dramas during the Republic of China, which brought me back to that heart-rending era.
The biggest disadvantage of Sanlian is that there are no discounts, not at all. It is located in the art museum. After choosing a book in Hanfen Building, you can slowly walk north and you can reach it in 15 minutes.
The following introduces some online bookstores
20.www.dangdang.com www.joyo.com www.welan.com. Recommendation level: 2 stars
These three bookstores are similar. The latter Weilan mainly relies on buying textbooks, and the first two are comprehensive stores. All three bookstores offer some discounts, usually 20 to 90% off. Weilan does not require a book delivery fee, while the other two sometimes charge a book delivery fee of 4 to 5 yuan. The disadvantage of buying books here is that you can't choose, which means you lose the fun of choosing books, but it's much more convenient and comfortable, and you can enjoy it in the dormitory. Online shopping is said to be more discounted than other places. In fact, the discount is not much, at least it is definitely less than the discount in Xuelin.
21.www.china-pub.com. Recommendation level: 3 stars
The reason why we recommend this place is that it is closely related to our profession.
This bookstore has a complete range of books in the field of electronic communications and computers, and the discounts are also very good. Books that are not available at Dangdang and Excellence may be available here.
22.www.kongfz.com. Recommendation level: 4 stars
This is a place where a bookworm should go. If you can tolerate old books, if you want to find books from a few years ago or decades ago, you can check out Confucius. Kongfuzi is a second-hand bookstore alliance with many small second-hand bookstores. The trouble is that it's only available by mail order here. Even so, in order to find those old editions of books that have been withdrawn from the market, it is worth paying a little postage or waiting for two days.
