The difference between a passport and a visa

A passport is a legal document issued by a country that proves the nationality and identity of a citizen when entering or leaving the country and traveling or staying abroad.

A visa is an annotation and seal placed by a country's sovereign authority on the passport or other travel documents held by its or foreign citizens to indicate that they are allowed to enter, exit or pass through the country's territory. It can also be said to be a certificate of endorsement issued to them.

The role of passports and visas

Nationals need a passport to show the sovereignty or government of the issuing country. A passport relates to a person's legal rights abroad and the right to become a national. Passports usually contain the holder's photo, signature, date of birth, nationality and other personal identification.

Visa is a measure taken by a sovereign country to safeguard its sovereignty, dignity, security and interests. Visa is an important means for a sovereign country to manage entry and exit.
