What happens when the Italian tourist visa expires?
Staying in Italy after the short-term visa expires conflicts with immigration laws and regulations. Even if the country has signed a visa-free agreement with Italy or the European Union, the maximum period for its citizens to stay in Italy or the European Union is only three months.
At the same time, it should be emphasized that under any circumstances, applicants cannot apply for visa extension or request a new visa in Italy or the European Union, and must return to their country of origin to apply for the corresponding visa.
The current Italian laws and regulations also stipulate that those who stay in Italy without a legal visa, such as tourist visas, will be punished by 5,000 to 1 10,000 euros depending on the seriousness of the case.
In addition, according to Law 286/98, the Italian government has the right to expel foreigners who are illegally staying in Italy.
Therefore, if the visa expires and is detected by the police, the foreigner will be subject to administrative penalty of paying a fine, but if the foreigner leaves Italy automatically after the visa expires, he will not be subject to administrative penalty or deported.
