How to get to Badaling Great Wall

There are three ways to go to Badaling Great Wall: tourist bus, bus, and train.

1. Special tourist bus

Badaling is located in Yanqing County northwest of Beijing, about 80 kilometers away from the urban area. There is a highway from the city to Badaling. It can be reached in one hour by tourist bus. The tourist bus departs every morning from the east side of Qianmen Tower in downtown Beijing.

2. Bus

The cheapest way to climb the Badaling Great Wall is to take Line 2 from Jishuitan Station Exit A (Northwest Exit) or Exit B (Southeast Exit). Walk to the right behind Deshengmen and take bus No. 877 directly to the foot of the Badaling Great Wall. It takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to arrive at the station, with no stops.

3. Train

The Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, China’s first trunk railway built under the leadership of the patriotic engineer Mr. Zhan Tianyou, passes through here and set up a station here. Existing Beijing suburban tourist trains stop at Badaling Railway Station.

The architectural structure of the Badaling Great Wall

The Badaling Great Wall has a trapezoidal gate that is narrow in the east and wide in the west. It was built in the 18th year of Hongzhi in the Ming Dynasty (1505), and was repaired during the Jiajing and Wanli years. There are two east and west gates in Guancheng. The east gate has the inscription "Juyongwai Town" on its forehead, which was engraved in the 18th year of Jiajing (1539); the west gate has the inscription "North Gate Lock and Key" on its forehead, which was engraved in the 10th year of Wanli (1582). Both gates are of masonry structure, with a platform on the platform. There are passages to the north and south of the platform, connecting the city walls of Guancheng, and crenelations are built around the platform. A total of 1,316 piers and abutments were built before and after.

The Badaling Great Wall typically displays the majestic and steep appearance of the Great Wall. As a barrier to Beijing, the mountains here overlap and the situation is dangerous. The extremely majestic city wall spirals from north to south and extends among the mountains, with no end in sight. The Great Wall stretches out on both sides of the mountain and stands on dangerous cliffs. The word "natural danger" written by the ancients on the steep cliffs accurately summarizes the military importance of Badaling's location.
