Japan’s Tsushima Island Travel Guide

Tsushima is located in the Korean Strait between Japan and South Korea and belongs to Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. It consists of 5 islands, with a land area of ??about 697.7 square kilometers, and a population of 66,096 in 1940 (reaching its peak). The main towns are Yanyuan (administrative center) and Jizhi. Historically, it was a stepping stone between the Japanese Archipelago and the Korean Peninsula. From the 12th century to 1868, it was a fiefdom of the Zong family. In 1274 and 1281, the Yuan Dynasty captured Tsushima Island twice during its two eastern expeditions to Japan, and the islanders were massacred. In 1905, the Battle of Tsushima Strait between Japan and Russia took place.
