Thoughts on choosing a major
The college entrance examination is coming soon, which means that we will soon face the headache of choosing a major. Here I would like to share some of my personal thoughts with my fellow students. They are not suggestions, but just the results of my thinking over the past six months or so. There is right and wrong, please don’t listen to bias.
The first point is to choose a major that interests you. I think this is the most important point! I don’t think I need to repeat the simple truth that interest is the most important teacher. What I want to say is that if you study a major that you have no interest in in order to choose a popular major, or because of the requirements of your parents, then the saying will come true - if you choose a wrong major, you will feel like a senior in high school every year! Those who say that interest can be cultivated can only stand and talk without pain!
Why do you say that? You are absolutely free in college. No one will care about you, and no one has any reason to care about you. Imagine that in such an environment, you would learn something that you have no interest in? Will you bite the bullet and think about your future and force yourself to read those books? Never overestimate your self-control! There is another reason that is not very responsible. Most people cannot find a suitable job after graduation anyway, so they might as well study what they like in college.
The second point is to choose a school, a major, and a city. Which of the three comes first? There is no formula for this, and there is no standard answer. This needs to be comprehensively considered based on your college entrance examination scores, family background, hobbies, school profile, professional requirements, urban education level, economic consumption level, etc. For example, my school is Guilin Tourism College. I was just upgraded from a junior college to an undergraduate school in 2015. Just based on this sentence, I would think that my school is quite low. Actually no, in the hotel management major, we are among the best in the country (it is said that we are still number one). This is the school's trump card major. Maybe other majors are poor, but hotel management can be the king. If your family is poor, then don’t go to first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and don’t consider those Sino-foreign joint majors that your family can’t afford. Don’t cause too much trouble to your family by studying. Only a very small number of academic masters are qualified if they meet the three requirements.
The third point is that you should only listen to half of the opinions of your parents, elders, teachers and classmates that are useful to you. The best person to make the final decision is yourself. Many of my classmates have complained to me that they want to change majors. Many of them chose majors with their parents’ help and they don’t like them. These people are usually anxious and want to learn something but cannot listen. In the end, I could only play games in class and sleep in every day to maintain my life. There's no harm in listening to other people's opinions, but it's your fault if you don't have your own opinion. They are all adults or about to become adults, and they still have to make their own decisions about their future. Don't be a giant baby that won't grow up.
The fourth point is to understand the deeper issues of the school and major. When choosing a major, you must know the basic curriculum, the training direction of the major, the employment prospects after graduation, etc. If you only understand the major from the name of the major, I really want to give you a "thumbs up"! Understand what courses you will take in the future, what you can learn, how you will use it, and in what areas you will use it. Whether the talent market for this major is saturated, the development prospects of the major, and whether other majors or skills related to the major are competitive. Advantages. You also need to understand the school's resources, including living resources, equipment conditions, teacher support, political resources, etc. Living resources include dormitory conditions, whether they are old buildings, whether there are private bathrooms, washbasins, air-conditioning fans, etc., as well as the development of school cafeterias and commercial streets, the distance to the urban area, and traffic conditions. Equipment conditions include the hardware and software facilities of the classroom, whether the research institution has a large laboratory, etc. The school’s teaching staff can be found on the official website. Political resources include the government's help in school construction and government-school cooperation projects. For example, our school is a tourism college, and Guangxi happens to be building a tourism city, so the tourism institute cooperates with our school. In this way, students will have the opportunity to do tourism research with teachers and learn a lot. There are also social resources. For example, our school has cooperated with most well-known hotels in the world, which is of great help to students for internship. Exchanges abroad are common.
The fifth point is, no matter how well the major, school, or city you choose meets your requirements, there will be a gap after you arrive at school! This is absolutely! Actual and expected are always different. But don’t be discouraged, the road is made by people. No matter what school you are in, you will always make progress as long as you work hard, and you must learn to make use of existing resources. Your teachers, classmates, everything around you are resources you can use.
The sixth point is, don’t be too ambitious! Based on your own performance, choose the one that suits your situation. I have a classmate who applied for Peking University as his first choice and Tsinghua University as his second choice, but he only scored over 400 points. Life is not a child's play, do it and cherish it. There are only 6 wishes in a ***, and each one must be used well.
The seventh point is, don’t be a guinea pig. What does it mean? If the major you choose is a new major in that school, then you will be the guinea pig for the school and the teacher's experiments. I am now. The major of culinary and nutritional education is the first in our school. The school's talent training direction is unclear, and it can only copy what other schools have done. If the teacher has no experience, it will be difficult for the students to learn the key points. The school does not have the appropriate hardware conditions, so it is difficult for us to practice our vocational skills.
Point eight, love can be eaten, but it is not enough.
If you and your TA have gone through the hardships of the senior year of high school together and want to fly together in college. Then you are most likely to have been carried away by love. If two people have the same ambition and apply for the same school, that is certainly excellent, but the proportion of such situations is extremely small. Many people often give up their own preferences and ambitions in order to stay in another place and to be closer. In the end, there were not just one or two examples of two people getting separated. I am not qualified to dictate your choices. I just want to say four words - be rational. Of course, I believe that the power of love is great. If there is love, it can conquer many things (not everything).
How can I get the information I need to know above? The most basic thing is definitely word-of-mouth reputation. You can get an idea of ??the general situation of a school by just finding some experienced and well-informed teachers. Then you can go to the school's official website to find the information it displays to the outside world. If you can see the internal information displayed on the official website, you can already know a lot of information. In addition, you can learn more about it through social software, such as Weibo and Tieba. In Tieba, you can find the seniors of the school and ask them about the pros and cons of the school you want to know.
In fact, there are many more points, such as the six choices, the first two are given a try, the middle is fought, and the last one is stable. This basic common sense of choice, you don’t need me to be verbose, you know it, even if you don’t You know, the teacher will also tell you, and the school will also hold special expert lectures. In addition, there are some points that I am not comfortable talking about. They are my personal extreme thoughts and I do not recommend them to everyone.
That’s all. I hope it’s useful to you, and I wish you success in your college entrance examination.
