Humble Administrator's Garden:
Humble Administrator's Garden is one of the four major gardens in China. 51950m above sea level? It is the largest garden in Suzhou and the best garden in the south of China. From 65438 to 0997, Suzhou classical gardens such as Humble Administrator's Garden were declared as World Heritage by UNESCO.
The site of this garden was a scholar's garden in the Tang Dynasty and later became the temple garden of Dahong Temple in the Yuan Dynasty. 15 13 years, during the reign of Emperor Chengzu of Ming Dynasty, a manager named Wang requisitioned this temple and transformed it into a private villa with a garden, which was built by digging a lake and accumulating the resulting soil into an artificial island. This garden was designed in cooperation with Wen, a famous artist in Ming Dynasty. It is as big as today's garden, with many trees and pavilions. A few years later, the Wang family sold the garden and changed hands many times since then.
StevenCowes, an American middle school teacher, is a person who knows Suzhou very well. Out of his love for Suzhou, he spent nearly eight years writing an English book-Beautiful Suzhou: Social History and Cultural History of Suzhou in China (1998; Beautiful Su (China) tells western readers about the long history of this beautiful city from the reign of King He Lv of Wu in 5 14 BC to the 20th century. In Stephen's works, Suzhou is superior to words and images: Suzhou's history of more than 2,500 years is not only recorded in allusions and ancient books, but also solidified in city gates, ancient walls, rivers, streets, temples, markets and gardens. He revealed to western readers that Suzhou has more important things besides beautiful gardens and ancient customs: Confucianism, versatile literati close to nature, their lofty artistic accomplishment, loyalty and contribution to the country, and respect for tradition and ancestors. By chance, I became attached to Sue. I fell in love at first sight. I decided to write a book. StephenCowes' relationship with Suzhou began when he served as a tutor of a student association in the middle school where he worked. Students from Asia kept mentioning China to him, which aroused his interest. On the summer vacation of 200 1, Stephen Cowes followed a tour group and set foot on the land of China with great expectation. Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong. He was amazed by the local customs of these cities, but the beauty of Suzhou made him fall in love at first sight. Suzhou gardens are charming, beautiful and unique. Suzhou was also a small city at that time, so it was very suitable for wandering around, and you could experience the city in its corner, Stephen recalled. This city is very interesting. I decided at that time that I must come to Suzhou again. I want to see more and learn more about Suzhou. In the next few years, every summer vacation, Stephen will come to Suzhou to stay and make local friends. The longer you live in Suzhou, the more contact you have with Suzhou people. Stephen is very interested in Suzhou. He is no longer satisfied with seeing the beautiful scenery of Suzhou, but wants to know more about its history and culture. After leaving the army in 2006, I lived in Suzhou for half a year and visited Xinhua Bookstore, Foreign Language Bookstore and Suzhou Library in Suzhou. But he only found some pictures of Suzhou, and the simple information provided above could not satisfy Stephen's desire to explore Suzhou. After returning to America, Stephen continued to look for information about Suzhou. He tried his best to exhaust the library and network and found many academic papers about Suzhou. Although these papers are profound and interesting, and they have given me a lot of knowledge about Suzhou, they are not what I want. These studies only study a certain aspect of a dynasty in Suzhou, piecemeal. T find a book that can fully understand Suzhou. So I thought, I'd better write a book myself, a book I want to buy but can't afford, said T. Stephen. After six years of data accumulation, ten drafts of the new book came out. Stephen decided to write a general history of Suzhou suitable for ordinary people, with an introduction to Suzhou culture. The American uncle not only borrowed all available materials from the American library, but also bought precious old books from Amazon. He spent six years reading 475 books and documents about Suzhou. This beautiful Suzhou (beau? TIFSOO) is the earliest book about Suzhou that I found. This is written by a missionary who has lived in China for decades. I like this book very much. My book is also called beautiful Suzhou (beautiful? FulSu), only Su's ever-changing spelling is a tribute to the book published by 19 1 1. When writing this book, the most difficult thing is to sort out the information. With so much information, people and things are hard to find. In order to find the needed content from the huge database, Stephen set up a clear system, established folders according to dynasties, and classified related events and information. A lot of information is troublesome, but writing books is interesting. I think the most interesting thing is that Suzhou, like Paris, had the best scholars in China at that time and many officials. This is the economic center of China, and it is also the favorite seclusion place for literati.
For five or six hundred years, Suzhou has been the fashion center of the whole country: fashion style, architectural pattern, gourmet cooking, music and drama, whatever is popular in Suzhou, the whole country will follow suit. It was not until the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom invaded Suzhou that the status of Shanghai and Suzhou was exchanged. This situation has been affecting today. Stephen said cheerfully. After six years of careful preparation, Stephen buried himself in writing for nearly two years and finally finished the book on 20 14. More than a month later, China Books, an American publishing house specializing in China, extended an olive branch to him. Stephen further revised the manuscript with the help of the publishing house. After the revision of 10, Beautiful Suzhou: Social History and Cultural History of Suzhou in China was published and sold in the United States on 20 15, and its Kindle version was listed on Amazon on 20 16. Running publicity, not afraid of difficulties, looking forward to Suzhou becoming famous overseas.
