Exeter’s Economy

The city has a good industrial foundation and a large-scale service industry. In 2004, the Met Office moved its organization to Exeter, becoming one of the three largest local employers (the other two being the University of Exeter and Devon County Council).

On June 26, 2004, Exeter was awarded the title of "Fair Trading City".

Exeter’s economic industries are mainly automobile manufacturing and food processing. In 2007, the gross national product was 1.24 billion pounds, of which automobile manufacturing and food processing accounted for 60% and 20% respectively. In 2007, Exeter's GDP per capita was approximately £13,792.

Although Exeter is a tourist city, the city’s main industry is not tourism. Data in 2005 show that only 7% of employment comes from tourism (the data for the entire county of Devon is 13%).
