Guilin University of Technology is a multidisciplinary university with seven major disciplines: engineering, science, management, liberal arts, economics, law, and arts.

The school was founded in 1956, originating from the Guilin Geology School established in Guangxi by the former Ministry of Heavy Industry. It is a university directly under the former Ministry of Heavy Industry and the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry. The Ministry of Metallurgy and the Nonferrous Metal Industry Corporation were restructured in July 1998 into a university established by the central and local governments and mainly managed by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
